The reason for the bigger intercooler is because once i have a winch(still not sure if il be getting one) the whole thing will be blocked, now the new intercooler is much better at dissipating heat even without air being rammed onto it. This has been proved by a guy on the oz forum who has an arb bumper with winch and an evo 9 intercooler and the readings dont go over 50 degrees celcius. My old puny intercooler was 100% blocked as well and iv had the temp go upto 85 degrees.
Also Dougt has an alisport FMIC and he also has a arb bumper with winch and he also told me the difference is definitely noticeable and he hasnt had any overheating issues.
So in my thoughts on this are if my small intercooler being 100% covered achieved temps upto 85 degrees, this new one whcih is 4 times the size and 2 times wider will do a much much better job of keeping things cool. I have also stuck the old electric fan behind it to pull the hot air through.
I will report back with results today once the windscreen man has replaced the screen, i can then take it on the motorway and boot it and see if the temps can stay below 50 degrees.
Totally understand the theory mate and I have absolutely no doubt it gives an improvement, ive done it many times with performance petrol motors, this is identical to the one I had on my last Scooby

It's just unfortunate that its obstructed by the bumper and crossmember and couldn't go higher up to take advantage of the airflow through the grille

i wouldnt worry about restrictions from the cross member restricting flow, the face of it is huge and there looks to be plenty of airflow getting through
be interesting to see if theres any effect on initial engine pickup/ low down revs

Just took it for a spin, temps on the motorway stayed between 45-50degrees @70mph. old intercooler at 70mph the temps rise to around 80degrees, so looks like its paid of and there is more power after 2000revs deffo a good investment
OT but thats some impressive girth there GB .......................what make was it ?
It's an Evo 9 intercooler Dingle.
Raj, what temps is that you're measuring? Water temps? Where abouts? Is it from the scangauge?

Has anyone tried to shoehorn a FMIC into a classic. I know we have a lot less space. Might have the old front bumper of at the weekend to have a look

I will be doing it. Would have done it this month if not for engine going bang. I think there is room behind the grill and in front of the rad. Same argument presents itself for of air flow. But as Raj has proven it will be better than the top mount. However.... I am tempted to put it in the grill like this:
I've measured it up and there is plenty of room if you take the plastic grill out.

JESUS!! Wasn´t planning on going that extreme. Think that is a bit of overkill for a 2.5 diesel, unless your planning on a bigger turbo, which will inturn melt your pistons like cheese on toast
when i get chance i´ll knock up a dummy box which fits in, then find a intercooler similar to its size

Well this is a whole 'nother convo You've got some catching up to do!! Firstly, yes I do want a loud in your face FMIC. Yes I might be putting a bigger turbo on. No it won't melt the pistons, the head, or blow the valves. Yes it might blow the bottom end up again. I'm working on that one.

Hey if you don´t first succeed, try try again. Someone has to try something new first otherwise we would still be living in caves

Luke its inlet temps, they are measured post intercooler. the scangauge shows them
Ah cool. Worth knowing, thanks. That's a decent drop you got there then.

Yup thats the sort of drop i used to get when i switched the leccy fan on the old intercooler, so imagine if i stuck 2 fans on this intercooler
No kiddin eh! Or you could always mist that front mount. That said once your WI is fitted engine temps under boost are solved. I was thinking though what to do about the hot-day-stuck-in-traffic situation. Big IC's and WI are no use there. A leccy fan is all I can think of short of enhancing the cooling system.

Well to be honest, i took mine for a boot around and then i got stuck in traffic and the temps kept dropping until they reached 32degrees while stationery, so this evo IC is pretty awesome at dissipating the heat.
Wow ok that's pretty interesting then.
