Left front axle hard to turn...

2003 L200 Warrior... So I started getting a growling/vibration under acceleration. Jacked the truck up and found the left front tyre was stiff to turn by hand. It moves smoothly, but takes a bit of force to spin. I though maybe the wheel bearing were going, so I started disassembly. When I removed the drive flange, the disc spins freely. It is the axle itself that is stiff to turn. It is smooth, just stiff. The CV joints feel solid, no extra play.

When I spin this axle, the prop shaft spins as well...I am still learning the 4wd system of these L200s.

I did drain the diff oil t see if there were any metal bits, but there was only the usual metal powder collecting at the drain plug.

Any suggestions on what to check next? I was thinking of disconnecting the propshaft from the gear box to take one thing out of the equation.
