Moving the radio head unit

#1 by Greigboy , Sun Dec 11, 2011 11:47 am

Has anyone moved their stereo down to the cubby at the gearstick, on a classic.

My ham radio is currently mounted under the glove box but its unaccessable when driving and I want to move it closer to hand.
Its about the same width as a car stereo, but is a bit longer, too long to fit in the cubby but it should fit in the stereo slot, so I was going to move the stereo down to the cubby but I don't know if it would fit, anyone done it?

I was going to try and build a roof console but I'm trying to think of an easier option.

may find changing a cd a problem, other than that i have read of a few people doing just that, then using the `old` slot to fit a set of gauges

I've got the factory mitsi multichanger so cd's are not a problem, tapes might be an issue mind
The ham radio is much bigger than your average CB and sticks out too much even with the liner removed from the cubby so its a non starter, it would be perfect if it did fit there

what about modifying the pod (on top of the dash)
relocating the 3 gauges elsewhere ?
or a double pod ??

I had a 3.0L Alfa once which as standard, you had to change down from 5th to 4th, in order to operate the stereo.

GB, I can let you have an extension loom if the cable won't reach, which I don't think they do

I moved mine down. The only thing that never stretched was the ariel. I had to buy an extension bit which was about a quid on ebay.

Cheers Lez, I'll pop the radio out 1 night this week and have a look, it may not fit in the radio slot either, if it does I think it will need a Lez-tec loom for the power and speakers, there is a coil of aerial cable in the cubby so it should stretch

I did think of using the pod or having a double pod but it wouldn't be long enough to house the rig

Tell me about it, I had a main dealer service one time and they charged £12, repeat £12 to top up the screeen washer bottle. When I mentioned that it must have been almost full to start with, having been replenished about a month earlier, the fncker said that it's a standard charge but we've left the bottle with the remainder of the screen wash concerntrate in the vehicle for you. From then on I've had to endue funny looks from dealerships when I leave a vehicle for servicing and say "NO UNAUTHORISED ADDITIONAL CHARGES". Mitsubishi dealers may well be a$$holes but then again, there're all the same.
