The 4wd flashy light syndrome

#1 by bart , Mon Mar 10, 2014 11:26 pm

Am i right in thinking if when you turn your ignition on and are met with the flashing lights this means your vac can is duff ? Or is it not as simple as that ?

Also the front diff actuator rod is seized (which is probably also making the lights flash ) is there a way of unseizing it. I have tried mole grips but no joy.

cheers

Bart, if the light only flashes or acouple of seconds father start-up, then there is a very slight vac leak only, nothing to write home about.... You say the actuator is seized.... Have you disconnected the actuator from the axle to see if it's that or just that the gears were not aligned..there's a pin on the axle end of the actuator arm, fitted downwards from memory...

The light is flashing constantly from when i turn ignition on Lez. If i put it in 4wd it stops flashing and lights up as it should. Is the pin on the actual arm of the actuator ? there is a small metal sheaf about 3/4 of the way along the arm is this where the pin is.

I had this the weekend, when I turned on the ignition the green light would flash, once I started her up and put her in to 4 wheel drive it stayed on that's a good thing it means it is in four wheel drive when I took it out of 4 wheel drive the light would flash this means you have a small leak in one of the vac pipes,I bought some nice blue pipe from halfords a bit pricey mind you and changed as much of the pipe as I could get my hands on now I turn on ignition and start her up boom light goes out near enough straight away I would not go pulling the actuator arm until you have changed pipes

I have jumped the gun and bought 3 metres of pipe and i am going to start replacing. I am sure there is something up with the vac system as instead of the usual over boost associated with the l200 i have NO boost.

Good lad change pipes first and see what happens I was thinking all sorts my self, new vac pump new actuator new solinoid but in the end just a dodgy pipe I did clean all the contacts on solinniods as well and put plenty of grease on arm in side the rubber boot I was well happy when light was out so sometimes it can be a simple thing I am now flapping about other things the joys of owning a classic

Know what you mean... i was thinking vac can as the pump is only 3 month old or maybe the map sensor.......or maybe i should replace the vac pipes and at least that will rule out a split pipe.

Yes mate, but if you have a lack of vacuum it'll do the same, can you get access to a vac guage or would ya like to borrow one, I can ship it out to you on sat, just cover the postage..Use it for as long as you need it..
there is a rubber vac pipe that connects to a thin steel pipe running across to the drivers side of the bulkhead... take the rubber off , with the engine running and see if there is and 'suck' on the pipe .. wet your finger and stick it on the end, you will feel it if it's there..

Tell me about it.

I had a pajero before this that was 11 year older than this truck and it was mint underneath not a single bit of rust and never snapped a single bolt while working on it.

under this one is wall to wall ginger....99% surface rust but rust non the less and i took the front bumper off the other day to replace with a new one and out of the 12 bolts that hold it on 8 snapped and had to be drilled out !

I have started on the de-gingering to try and make it last a few more year

A bolt wouldn't work as it is about 2 mm hole ! and it is a metal pipe so cable ties are not gonna do it.
