A solution to low power / poor idling

Hi All

Geoff has an L200, a 2002 fly by wire. A few days back it suddenly lost power. It wouldn't idle and when on lower revs the revs cycled up and down. I recognise the symptoms from going through the forum but nobody has said "I've fixed it!!"

So, what we did. All the stuff like checking the crank pulse thing at the front, cleaning the injectors, checking the vacuum pipes, fuel filter

The solution, well its an older vehicle and clearly needs anew Timing Belt as it turned out to be very slightly slack and had slipped a cog on the fuel pump.

Simply take the top front plastic cover off, make sure the main font pulley is TDC and camshaft is on the timing marker (might need a full turn on the crank) then check the mark and setting mark on the fuel pump cog. It was out by one rung of the timing belt.

Now runs beautifully and found it a day before being booked in for a diagnostics check - which most likely would have set us looking in totally the wrong direction.

Now for the turbo which is squeeling on power. A note to all owners, change the oil routinely if only to protect the turbine!

Simon (with about 40 years of car maintenance - scary)
