Sam, it's cable driven mate, check the gearbox end hasn't come loose ( maybe after a clutch change or the like) also try removing the dash and firstly see that it's fixed in that end and then see if you can spin the inner cable freely.
If the cable is OK then its either the drive in the gearbox or the speedo head.
I have a set of clocks here if you find it's them thats gone.

Hi, sorry for hijacking the thread, but I also have a speedo problem, the mechanic said it was the head as opposed to the cable. The speedo still works although it jumps about a bit, but the noise is very annoying, sometimes it sounds like i have a flock of birds with me. It's a 2001 L200. Is this a difficult/expensive problem?

Speedo head is oiled when in original condition and probably gummed up ,best be scrappy or fleabay.

I've looked a few times on ebay but not seen anything, do you think it's cleanable/re-oilable? Again i'm sorry for hijacking the thread

Unless you're a watchmaker, stripping, cleaning and lubing the speedo head isnt a realistic proposition.

I've just had another look on ebay and there are a few, so if it's fairly straightforward i could get the mechanic to fit it once he gets back off holiday, it has to go in anyway as there's a rubber washer type thing for a leaf spring that has gone as well.
Is it better to get one close to my 130,000 or should i be looking for as few miles as possible as it might be better condition.

You will find it easier to run the new cable from the dash to the gear box. And pull the old cable out through the dash make sure you undo the retaining bolt and clip attached to the chassis and pop the grommet through the bulkhead and carefully feed it through over the steering column and out through the dash.
