#1 by emmabm ( Guest ) , Thu Nov 20, 2014 11:19 pm

Hi, I bought a 98 l200 diesel automatic last week,
She was driving lovely to start with, but has now started not changing up to 4th gear, started with it not changing up till 4000rpm but now hardly changing up at all, will normally change up once to start but then just doesn't want to know, any ideas???????[ponder]

Have you checked the fluid levels first thing

Emma, I would also say that the gearbox oil level needs checking, also worth changing the gearbox oil as it does wear thin and cause problems..

With the auto boxes unless you know how to get all the oil out it will be worth getting a garage to sort it.With Toyota auto's there is the 2 bucket method where you have 1 empty bucket and a bucket full of new ATF.Take the inlet pipe off and put into the full bucket and the outlet to the empty.Start the engine and as the fluid drains into the empty bucket it will suck the new fluid in.You will tell when its had a full change to new fluid as you'll start getting clean fluid coming out the outlet pipe

Thank you all for your replies,
Have checked the levels and if anything they are a little on the high side, going to change the gear box oil tomorrow, and go from there,
I know that she is rare, almost put me off buying her, but she is in such good condition and my husband has had a lots of hip operations so needed an auto to make it easier for him.
I have always serviced my cars myself and fixed them when I can,
Never had an auto before so going to be a bit of a learning,

I seem to recall the new shape sometimes suffers from the control unit loom fraying. If the levels don't work for you there may be something to look at in the wiring.

Also the toyota autos have a 'power' button, basically leaves the engine revving through the rev range to get max power output. Do the Mitsis have the same/similar button and is yours pressed?

Right, Ok so lets throw another couple of spanners into the works,
Now I have the green 4wd light flashing( in2wd) goes into drive but only drives 4 ft then comes to griding halt, put in reverse, will go back but very noisy, put In 4wd, will drive back and forth but still very noisy, leave her running In park for 15 mins; light goes out and drives fine again, ( apart from not going into forth,
She also makes central locking noises, like I am locking and Un locking the doors, doing this every now and then on her own and sometimes when I putting her in 4wd or when I press the overdrive button, ahhhhhhhh, did love this truck 4 days ago; rapidly going off her now lol

Thats quite high, guessing a shyte alternator TBH, that would cause all sorts of messed up electrical goings on.. green 4x4 light is normally a vacuum problem.
