occasionally used one for work for airport runs. From what i can remember they are nice, decent seating position, comfy bagged air suspension - the highway mode or drop it as low as it goes makes a big difference to how it handles on the road (body roll) never got a chance to take it off road

Very capable off road, but not without faults. The D3 was prone to niggly faults. All but the base model had air suspenders, and the air bags have less than half the life of a spring. The engine is painfully slow on the road, and is expensive to maintain. A new cambelt is an horrendous job and costs the thick end of a grand even at an independent. A new turbo require a the body coming off the chassis to fit (seriously). Most of those on the market are mysteriously at the age/mileage where cambelt has fallen due and the owner has got shot before any other bills came along.
A great off roader when on decent rubber and very good family motor, but buy very, very carefully. The crap ones massively outnumber the gems now. Early D4s are a better bet if you can scrape together the extra.

Glow plugs are made of cheese on them, so if they snap, its head off to machine the remnants out, and its body off to get the head off

Would it not be easier to take the engine out than remove the body for these faults ?

Body off for normal service items is obviously not a great idea, but those in the know can take the body off in around an hour, ( YouTube has several videos) so it's not as bad as it sounds.
I have video on my phone of one of our 4x4 response guys doing the pipe at Drumclog in his D3 and it went everywhere I did on the day. That particular car has now done over 200k and still runs like a watch, too many gizmos for me, but hasn't everything of a similar spec.

My Dads an automotive engineer, likes his fourbies though he never goes off road. Just likes the load capacity and the snow crunching ability. His shortlist ended up as a D3 and XC 90, and having examined the D3 with his critical engineers eye just laughed. Over 200,000 miles further on and the Vulva hasn't needed so much as a replacement bulb, service and wear items only. A D3 getting to half that mileage without significant problems is rare. Not unheard of but extremely unusual. D4 is much more sorted and addresses many of the shortcomings of the 3 and gives it a badly needed power and economy boost as well.

To be honest I may be after a brand new large fourbie soon, and as its my own money it ain't gonna have a Land Rover badge. Shall probably play it safe with a Land Cruiser or perhaps a Shoggy. As much as I love them, as capable as they are, I'd never touch another LR.

Very interesting to read. Been thinking about what to buy next, I thought about a disco3 after going out laning with one. Quite fancy a newer defender as they don't depreciate much, but can't convince myself about landrover reliability. Might have to buy a hilux. But then the d40 navara can run on veg, so that's an option. Maybe even a pram, but I really don't like them

Friend of mine has a 56 plate D3 .... never seems to have any issues with it ...other than a fault with an ABS sensor.
