Zoidburg's engine rebuild

#1 by Zoidburg , Sat Oct 03, 2015 8:36 am

Today's the day to begin sorting the buggered crankshaft and any other problems I may stumble across on the way.

Those of you that have seen my other thread will know that this is my first L200 and the crank pulley tried to jump off on the way home from buying it. The seller has refunded me £800 and I'm going to try and repair it for as close to that figure as I can get.

I'm working this morning but when I'm done there I'll be bringing a load of tools home and pulling the engine out and stripping it down. The aim is to get it stripped this weekend so providing I don't find too much else wrong with it I will be able to order the parts I need in the week and rebuild then re-fit the engine next weekend.

I will post pics and narrative as I go for anyone who's interested.

Didn't get started as quickly as I would have liked yesterday due to work and having to clear some space in my garage but the engine will be out shortly.Bild entfernt (keine Rechte)Bild entfernt (keine Rechte)

keep the CAT just in case it's needed for a future MOT (you never know what emissions laws may or may not change in the future) or at very least take it to your local scrap man who will give you money for it (most have got at least £50 back from scrappy)

Scrap value has dropped ...... a lot! Local garage who take our scrap metal from work said it's getting close to paying to have cars taken away again...

Scrap value is poor at present, you're lucky to get £20 for a CAT in this area.

As for the MOT a diesel CAT won't affect the smoke test results, it's purely down to whether the tester spots that a part of the emission control systems has been removed. It could also fail for the EGR not being there but in reality neither are likely to be spotted on a vehicle this age (especially if you work in an MOT test station like I do!).

The bores don't look too bad for 120,000 miles but there is some polished patches from the piston skirts and some light scoring, should get away without touching pistons, rings or bores.

While it's apart it might be worth giving it a light hone out and a new set of rings , it would almost be a new engine with what you are doing

I'm tempted Rob but "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" comes to mind. I've messed about with the rings on another engine build and created problems were none previously existed. I'm either going to leave it alone or go for a full on re-bore & pistons, because of the costs I think it will be the former not the latter!

All my parts have arrived so got cracking this morning getting everything cleaned and prepared for assembly then disaster strikes again!

When I got the cylinder head face cleaned up and started lapping the valves in I founds cracks in the swell chambers and between the valve seats on every cylinder, factor in how bad the exhaust valve seats look and how sloppy the valves are in the guides and it looks like I'm in for a new cylinder head too
