After reading your post Alan, I am going to admit to a second stupid thing in a week, the first you will possibly remember is my comment about your number plate, the second is this.

Your comment about steam cleaning just brought to mind Joanne bought a steam cleaner a few months ago to clean the upholstery and carpets in our caravan. Until your post I never gave it a thought to use it on the engine bay of my Truck.

Think when he says steam cleaner he means hot water pressure washer not the steam mop floor cleaning contraptions from JML and the like

No it's a high pressure steam cleaner, some daft Bar pressure.

I've been trying to nail down where my leak is coming from. There's oil all over the bottom, covering lots of things. I noticed the back top seal bolt was surrounded by oil and wiped it off the other day to see if it reoccurred. I also wiped the bit of gasket seal I could see (round the driver's side near the front) and that's remained shiny ever since. Having read this this morning, I went and stuck a socket on the back bolt. It was loose as ****. Several turns later, it's a bit more solid. I've ordered new top seals for the top, but not the rocker cover gasket itself, fingers crossed this might solve it...

i'm convinced my gearbox is leaking now as the spots seem to be under that rather then the engine.

And the oil looks nice and clean so I doubt it's from my engine.

It was me selling the alloy replacements, I was doing a kit with some stronger bolts etc that stopped the rocker cover gasket leaking so much,
Can do some more if there are enough people after one?

I know a few people on here have fitted them but never really got any feedback so no independent reviews but I think they work quite well

I think they were about £20 collected with cash or £25 with post & paypal..
Would have to check on it as the bolts were a special order and I can't remember how many I had to order to get them made up.

I made them up with: The alloy version of the half-moon seal, new rocker cover gasket, 2xnew top gaskets, 2x bolts and 3 washers.
You also need a decent sealant for the half moon seal when you put it in.

Similarly I'm not sure where mine's coming from either... I'm hoping the topseals under the bolts might cure it... if not, I'd be game for one of those kits from the sounds of it.

How much of a job is it to replace the RC gasket and the half-moon? Looks to me like there's a lot of stuff to disconnect/remove to get to it?

I'm sure someone sensible will be along with a proper answer soon. Or someone equally silly, but with a helpful answer anyway

The half moon does seem a bit pointless really as they could of just designed the head to fill the gap anyway

When the same head is used on a different model engine there is a drive shaft out of the back of the head driven by the camshaft, the 'half moon seal' is one half of that shaft hole, why make two heads for two different builds when you can produce one head, two rocker covers and a daft little seal ?

I've got one of these mystery leaks. Right under the near side front wheel below the wish bone. Every morning a small patch. But nothing if left for several hours during the day. Half moon seal and rocker gasket are dry. Crank seal and front of engine are dry. What's more the truck is parked over night on a camber towards the off side wheel. The leak never touches the wheel / tyre and there is nothing oil related that far over in the bay. If oil levels are going down it is extremely minor. I check it every day. The explosion from the escaped rod was on the other side if the engine too. Very puzzling.

On the other note, BMB I'll have a half moon kit. Seems like a great idea.

Coverplate on the side of the block behind the fuel pump ?
or a front seal creeping round, blown by the fan.

I'll check tomorrow. What front seal you thinking of? And SE, what cover plate is that too?And surely it would drip the other side because of camber when parked? Not to mention the winds round this way would push it to the off side too!!

Luke there are crank, cam, and two balance shaft seals in the front, all with oil pressure behind them.
There is the upper balance shaft access plate held in by two 6mm bolts, runs along the side of the block, about 3" down from the head.

Just trying to visualise. Isn't the balance shaft on the off side?
