Cam/timing belt change question

#1 by Hillbilly , Wed Apr 11, 2012 4:13 pm

Hi all, have a k74 l200.

Just going to order my bits for the timing belt change/tensioner kit.
(im not gonna do it myself, hence my question).. Do I need to change the water pump at the same time? Does the timing belt run the water pump? or is it seperate.

& is Milners the best place to get the bits and bobs.

Thanks all.

give milners a bell bud, they`re very helpful and normally well informed too - they`ll just give, (er, sell !) you what you need.

Thanks for the reply Basil, I phoned Milners already before I posted above, and they didnt know! So..... again anyone know, do you change the water pump same time as timing belt?

billy, the pump is driven by the alternator belt, but its worth doing when everything else is off, Your local motor factor should be able to do a gates belt kit, this has 2 belts & 2 tensioners in it. I get them trade price for around £100 + vat so dont know what the retail is but they are much better quality than milners bits.

Greigy, thanks. Is there a recommended mileage change for the water pump? or do they just get replaced when necessary?

normaly just when they leak mate but for the cost of doing it when everything else is off justifies getting it done.

Its a canny strip down to do a pump so while your 3/4 of the way down doing the belts, it would be silly not to change it.

Dont think a pump would be a great amount to buy, i bought a cheapy off the net and its a good piece of kit for the monies,
