cleaning inside turbo housing

#1 by Oldbilly , Mon Aug 22, 2016 5:25 pm

I have come to the conclusion my variable actuator must be clogged although its been adjusted its not returning fully, taking it off to clean it seems quite a pitta, I have seen on you tube people cleaning their variable actuators with mr muscle oven cleaner which gave me an idea, I was thinking of drilling and tapping a small 2/3mm hole in the exhaust housing then spraying mr muscle oven cleaner in put a small bolt into the tapped hole and leave for a few hours then start then engine, does anyone think this would work?

I read up on the oven cleaner trick and it seems the best way to do it is to drop the exhaust manifold and spray the foam up into the turbo and then blank it off to stop it running back out . I've never come across anyone who has drilled a hole in the turbo to get foam in so couldn't say if it would work

What shape l200? 10 plate onwards with the 3 bolt downpipe are the only ones with vgt all the others have a waste gate flap chances of either if them sticking are slim

Not seen the classic shape turbo but if it has that ring you wouldn't be able to clean it fully you'd need to pull the exhaust off. Are you sure it's been adjusted properly as the bar won't move a great amount you could always rig up a boost gauge and check your getting the correct pressure

Yes agreed it may take more than one application to clean it, the ring is inside the exhaust housing but since I have adjusted the turbo using the guide its boosting freely beyond 3k revs also the mpg which I am monitoring has increased.
This started when I noticed the bar was not returning fully and it could be forced into place since the adjusting the boost screws its now returning fully, I know that if I remove the exhaust all the bolts will most likely shear off and it will turn a real dogs dinner so just thinking of alternative methods before I bite the bullet.
