Loosening the Crank shaft Bolt??

#1 by Yoda , Sat Apr 21, 2012 5:44 pm

Right, dad's on his way out to get a right angled breaker bar (mine won't fit in the engine bay as it has a 60/70degree bend) and a blow torch so we can try to get this crank shaft bolt out. Just thought I'd see if anyone has had success doing it?

Also, how do you brace the engine? I was putting it in gear but it was still turning the engine (?????) so we put it in 4wheel drive in case the transfer box was causing slip. It helped a little but now we are also bracing the engine using the cam shaft and applying pressure to the cam belt to try to prevent slip.

We tried shocking the crank bolt with a mallet and a Ratchet but to no avail.

Any ideas...........

shove it in gear, get your old man to stand on the brakes, add a three foot tube to your breakers bar, and heave slowly, shock it and you have every chance you will shear the bolt

Is it definitely a standard threaded bolt? Ie anti clockwise to loosen? I know some vehicle are reverse.

no as you look at the front of the engine it turns anti clockwise to remove, its up with a nut lock compound, and you really need to use the same putting it back, its effin tight as well, cant rem the exact torque but its deff close to `ive ruptured meself` ponds feet, its well reported they dont go easy but when they do its with a sudden shock, so make sure that your feet are ready also have something thats gonna absorb the bar rather than the top of your wing

We got two breaker bars and plenty of leverage now. What's confusing is that we are turning the engine??? But it IS in gear.

Warriobez you got that spot on. 5th Gear, stand on the breaks and a large breaker bar. Gave it a couple minutes with the blow torch first too. Someone put that up on the HOW TO section for future people.............

Haha no I was standing on the brakes!

Thanks Treeboa

Right, where I'm at now. Thought that was the biggest issue done but now my pulley puller doesn't fit the crank pulley. So we're done for tonight until we get a bigger puller tomorrow. Prob is the biggest puller I can get is Halfords 6 inch one. The crank shaft pulley is near enough 6 & 3/4 inches. It might just work due to the puller's good design. Me and a friend successfully got a Nissan 300ZX pulley off with one, and that was slightly too big also. So we'll give it a try, but I'm just curious if it is a specialist Mitsi tool??

if it moves you may find you will have to put some wd behind it and shove it back on again before trying again, i often find appearing with a decent hammer in my hand and giving the bastard a good talking to about why it does not want to meet mr hammer works well

5th gear did it for mine. Have heard of people removing the starter motor and jamming the flywheel.

Yep, that was next on my list to try. With the 300ZX we cranked the engine and let the breaker bar lever against the ground.
