05 animal battery drain and reverse switch

#1 by nathann88 ( Guest ) , Tue Nov 22, 2016 11:31 pm

hi recently brought a 2005 animal, however have discovered that the reverse lights dont work, probbaly the switch. any advice on how to gain acces to it, i have found it but trying to get to it is fun.

and the big fault it has a battery drain, its aa big drain as it will flatten a charged battery over night to 1-2v yet connecting up a multi meter to test for a draw whist its off im getting 0....

any thoughts or suggestions on where to look?

thanks in advance nathan

when I changed my reverse switch I just had to struggle with a spanner to get to it (on top of gearbox)
mine wasn't so bad as I have a 2 inch body lift which gives a bit more access
what does the volt gauge rad on the dash ? it should read 14v when the truck is running
if it reads 12 or 16 then most likely the alternator is goosed (not all that uncommon)
how new is the battery ? they only last about 3 or 4 years

Battery doesn't matter as have used the old one as well as a new one
Voltage I'd fine when running it's the discharge the problem.
Had alternator tested and it was fine :-(

A set of these https://www.machinemart.co.uk/p/clarke-c...5LWzBoCq3Xw_wcB
Will make the job easier as the socket needs to go over the wire. If you don't have a body lift it can be done using these for the restricted access.
Do you have an alarm system on the truck, if so these can drain a battery if a short or bad earth is evident.

So have found that the faulty circuit is draining at 3.46amps
On the fuse box it is the speedo fuse.

Remove this and amps being used drops to nothing
However obviously need the speedo in order to drive. Any suggestions on where to look for the fault? Or any wiring diagrams so I can see what else is on that circuit?

Thanks Nathan
As for the switch that can wait for now

if it's fuse 10 then that should be just your dash lights
when my reverse switch went it would keep blowing the fuse and putting the srs light on
try pulling the dimmer switch wheel out of the dash (just to the right of the steering wheel)
if it's a short somewhere in your dash lights then this should at least stop your battery from draining if that's the issue
changing the reverse switch may well solve your problem ........ not gonna say it will for sure but if you change it and it keeps blowing fuses then at least you'll know one thing that it aint

and when I say pull the dimmer switch out, I mean pull it out of the dash and unplug it temporarily

I removed everything on the dash yesterday as I needed to get to 2 of the bulbs so as it stood there was nothing on the dash.
It was still drawing the 3.46amps.

Noticed tonight that the h4 S come on dim when you switch the side lights on (as well as the side lights) then brighten up when you turn dipped and full beam on

The fuse drawing the power when removed stops the Rev counter working and warning symbols on the clocks. All the other lights aren't affected.

Think it's sort the reverse switch out
Then look into earth connections
Any wiring diagrams anyone knows off
Its got to be an easy fix it's just locating it

pretty sure the diagrams are on this site somewhere (not sure where myself as have not needed them)
if you register as a member on here and upgrade then you'll be able to see all the site, and more importantly, everyone else will be able to read your posts
it's free to join so you've nothing to lose

that's perfectly normal , that's just how they work
if you dont want the head lights to come on dimly with the side lights then there is a dim/dip relay behind the drivers headlight in a little metal cage ....... unplug that and you'll just have sidelights on the first turn of the light stalk
