Suspension Lift

#1 by stormforce , Sun May 20, 2012 1:49 pm

I have now fitted the shackles from Lez and cranked up the torsion bars while waiting for the ball joint spacers. This is what i did.
Fitting Shackles
1/Lube up nuts and bolts in advance
2/Undo the nuts for the rear leaf shackle.
3/Jack the rear of the truck to allow suspension to drop and put on axel stands.
4/Put jack under rear end of leaf spring and jack up to release pressure on the shackle.
5/Knock the old shackle out
6/Fit new bushes if required to spring and mounting point.
7/Fit shackle to mounting point and just leave the nut loose.
8/I used a bottle jack between the leaf and chasis to push the spring down to fit the shackle to desired position.
9/Fit bolt and remove bottle jack and tighten up both nuts.
10/Repeat above for opposite side.

Torsion bar adjustment
1/Lubricate adjustors in advance.
2/Make sure vehicle is on level ground and measure the gap from centre of hub and under side of wheel arch and then jack up the front end so both wheels are off the ground
3/Undo the locking nut on the bolt first
4/Mark the adjuster bolt and cross member so you can tell how many turns of the adjuster bolt has been turned, have a 17mm spanner on the adjuster nut so it can be locked in place when turning the bolt.
5/I just adjusted mine quite a few turns on both sides
6/Once adjusted do the locking nut up tight again
7/Lower the truck and measure the gap from the centre of hub and the underside of the wheel arch.
8/Take truck for a spin and then park up on level ground and re-measure the gaps again. If un-even then repeat the above untill both sides are even.
9/Once even fit bigger tyres and go and enjoy the truck

Thanks mate
One thing i haven't done yet and that's the extended brake lines. There is still some slack in the standard hoses but once i got more time i will get the brake lines changed.I will need at some point to get new shocks aswell but they will need to wait till i can afford them now

Buggar i was going to but completely forgot about it GB.
I was going to fit the new upper bushes aswell but i need to get new spring bushes at some point and do them all together so what i will do when i take the shackle off i'll put the old one on again to get the measurement

Nice job you've done there Rich

when I put new bushes on mine I had to "spread" the shacklez a bit to get them in(taking most of the paint off in the process) . It took a bit of fettling but this is what mine look like now

Thanks
Damn this site is addictive and bad for the back pocket LOL
With the lift kits I will also replace the brake hoses with S/S ones
Once I get the mods done will be time to get the bodywork fettled.

Probably just a decent paint job, maybe get it painted to match my Harley which is blue/black with airbrush work
The jury is out at present
