I'm in the process of replacing the roof on my old stone barn.
The slate I've taken off is fairly well worn & I'm debating replacing with artificial - Tapco or cement fibre.

Do you have any recommendations on these.
PS. Due to Building Control I also have to insulate and will be replacing with a sealed warm roof design.

Cant say much about Tapco, never used them ,but they do look good! Check out Eternit slates ,Rivendale or Garsdale, cheap option is Thrutone but the planners might not like them. Best is Welsh slate but super expensive! http://www.wix.com/pressleeroofing/wwwwixcompressleeroofing

If you're ever planning a trip North of the border (Kirkcaldy) and fancy giving me a quote on my garage roof let me know . The guy who had the house before me bowed it standing on it to adjust the satelite dish! Now the rain collects and seeps through the joins. Added bonus is i THINK it's asbestos so not sure if removing it or trying to fully cover it with rubber / plastic would be better. Someone made an attempt at patching it with some black tar type stuff and flashbanding but to no avail.

Hi Rooferman, I'm looking at getting my garage roof done and thought I'd ask you what you think it would cost me (roughly) to get it done.

Basically it's a 2.7m wide by 6.5m long garage made from blocks, a DIYer has definitely built it as the blocks are all a bit wonky and the flat roof is completely stuffed, the water pools at one end and the local pigeons use it as a meeting place!

What I was looking at getting done was the old roof removed, then I was going to get probably 2 more courses of blocks laid on top of the existing walls to give the garage a bit more height, then a new flat roof put on. I don't think the roof will be able to drain into existing drains but was thinking of just having a gutter at the end with a down pipe into a water butt, would this work? It will probably be handy seeing as we are on a hosepipe ban for the foreseeable future, even though it's rained every day for the last 2 weeks!

So just wondering, with the details I've provided, would it be possible to work out roughly what cost I would be looking at for this? it would be handy to know so when I get a few quotes from round here I'll know if they're trying to rip me off!

cheers, greg

Greg, if its any help my conservatory drainage goes straight to a flagged floor. It evaporates as quickly as the rest as the back paved garden.

I understand generally why people like to have rainwater for plant life etc but it soon fills up. A butt is not required if you're just wanting it to go elsewhere without a drain.

Thought I'd just say.

I too need to replace a asbestos garage roof... be interested to know what products people are best value for money in their opinions too!!

Good luck!

Hi , cost for new rafters, new ply decking and 3 layer Torch-on felt roof using quality felt ,probably about £1500.00 ,you could do it a bit cheaper using OSB board and two layer felt. Extra blockwork £400.00 -£500.00 Watch your height with the blocks ,if you go too high you might have troble with the planning dept
My prices are London prices you might get a better deal in other parts of the UK.
The water butt should be fine, the other option is to dig a soak-away.
