Waterless coolant

#1 by Yoda , Thu Oct 18, 2012 9:04 pm

Any one ever used waterless coolant?

http://www.evanscoolants.co.uk/

Saw it on Wheeler Dealers. Seems it's good for cars that are prone to over heat. Ed took the rad cap off a hot TR6 while it was running! And NO steam!

Did you see him do the engine flush and the output levels drop greatly. That looked an amazing bit of kit

Yup! Got me immediately thinking why are we not using this stuff on our trucks? Is there any downsides to it?

But it lasts the life of the vehicle or until you drain the coolant for other reasons.

I saw that and went straight on the tinterweb :-) bloody expensive stuff though, bearing in mind you have to pre flush the system at £40 then the actual stuff £69 for 5 liters.
If my top/bottom hose went I would weep

That looks like it could stop heads cracking as it absorbs the engine heat. NICE.

But if it has better heat abortion capabilities than water / antifreeze mix?

There is another product out there that claims to lower the engine coolant temperature, its called "Water Wetter". One of the lads used it when we were racing.
Not as dear as the other stuff, not even sure if it works.

The evanss stuff does work, but if a car is over heating it's normally better that your water starts boiling up and blowing steam out to let you know about it.
If you have a super-coolant that lets the thing get up to 180deg because you don't notice the temp gauge rising then you are going to have a big block of scrap metal rather than just a blown head gasket.

The water-wetter stuff also works a little, we use it on the kit cars with the big bhp and small alloy rads. It's not magic but 1 bottle will do 50 odd liters so only works out at a couple of quid each time you change your coolant.

As said, the evans stuff is a bit expensive as weel. It's ok on a race car or plane but on the L200 if you have to take the rad out to change the belt etc then £100 odd for coolant makes it an expensive job.

if one has a egt gauge would that make the use of such a supercoolant more of a good thing, BMB ?

Also BMB would you advise the use of water wetter then? I take your comments about waterless. Seems fair to me.

Would a 'super coolant' show any change in EGT's? I would have thought not?

cant see much advantage over cost tbh, like samco hoses, alisport intercoolers you dont need it, its a brick, a heavy brick not a race machine
