so got a bit of steel bar for £7.00 turned it down in my lathe drilled some hole in it and taped it out a bit of spray just it case i put it down and could not find it in the dark

I made one as well for mysef but mines got red paint on it...mines from hollow tube btw as i only needed mine for winding down and up the spare wheel..I got a 5 tonne bottle jack and handle already..

sorry to write on this topic but how do you use the jack arm to lower the spare wheel? I have pulled on the chain but never had to look at the spare before

Put the handle in from the rear and it locates on the 'T' bit at the rear of the mechanism..goes through the hole in the rear valance...
Turn the jack handle anti-clockwise and the spare will (shoul) lower down..

cheers Krut and Lez. I was being dense and didn't know there was a hole above the number plate to go through! - got the spare off to find it has no pressure in it and very little tread, New set of tyres coming now me thinks.....descisions..decisions..

Your jack may just need topping up with fluid
Or get a Merc Sprinter one from a scrappy, they lift very high and will be fine weight wise.
