Under-body protection yet?

I need a set for my classic and I am loathe to buy the overpriced nonsense that is asfir plates 790 for a full set!!

If not going back to the fabricators in inverness to see if they will do a set in 4mm steel.

I had previously asked McK to have a look before Crimbo but he was pretty busy at that time

i'm sorted now actually - a set have come available.

cheers GB - I asked mck as well before chrimble but he told me flat out he was up to his neck in stuff he needed to get through for surfs and wouldn't be looking at them till into the new year I doubt his to do list has shortened much to be fair lots of people asking for stuff - but then when you look at the quality of his stuff its not really a surprise.

I've got detailed drawings for Asfirs and was going to make them myself but my welder and compressor are bust and I can't justify the expense of replacing them which would be the best part of a grand, hence I was going to get someone to make them.

For under body protection I'm going to have a look at strengthening the original fitment sump/transmission guard using tube. The idea is to save on weight whilst not compromising protection as weight means a drop in mpg. If that won't provide enough protection then I was already part way through designing a tubular fuel tank guard so would make something similar for the front. Again it would save weight. A load of 4mm sheet will weigh a fair bit. Stick a winch bumper on to and that's a fair nose weight.

already put the winch bumper on (front and back) mate - i don't think the underbody will add much more

It's just a full 8x4 sheet of 4mm weighs quite a bit. And it would need most of a full sheet to protect the sump and transmission and make all the brackets to fit.

but at least it would be inside the wheelbase - the winch bumper hanging off the nose makes a much bigger difference imho.

to be fair the trucks are designed to carry weight. its just where we put it that's a little different

Just seen the price in your original post!! 790 quid!!!! Are they making it out of solid gold! A full sheet of 4mm mild will cost at most £50 to the public. Think I'd better get making some sump/transmission guards and stick them in the adds section for about £150 quid or something lol.

The ARB winch bumpers were the best part of a grand at one point, and there's nothing particularly sophisticated about that either, im not even convinced the asfirs are that great, Hellboy's were pretty badly out of shape after the Clog and Basil's fell to bits after a day at the quarry.

Undoubtedly they done their job as both trucks drove home at the end of the day but im pretty sure 4mm steel wouldn't have bent so easy, but i suppose they probably weigh 3times as much

On the land rovers well sell 4mm but we get them heat treated so they work out to be 7mm steel in strength
