Sorry for the constant posting of new topics - I think this is the last one!
I'm pretty sure my turbo is struggling a bit - had big overboost issues and the Mitsy garage I took it to plugged it into a boost gauge and sorted that out for me by screwing in the max boost adjustment. It's now fully in, and there's still very little power. No EML light any more but you can tell that the truck would rather do anything else than climb a small hill...
Is there a way of checking to see whether the exhaust side of the turbo is full of crap without taking it out completely (I'm not a mechanic by any stretch and the idea of removing the turbo is a bit daunting!) and if so, is there something I can do to clean out some of the carbon, again without dismantling? I've tried the cleaners that you spray into the air intake but they don't do a whole lot.
If not, how big a job is removing the turbo, bearing in mind I have no idea what I'm doing?

its only a few bolts to remove the turbo mate, 8 bolts to remove the exhaust manifold if you prefer

One other point to remember, spin the turbo for resistance/balance. It should spin freely and without excessive wobble.
Anything is possible, all you need is imagination or own a bank!

Before you remove it take the front hose off and see if it spins freely also check for up down wobble on the shaft.

I think it's probably spinning ok, I can hear it winding up around 1800 revs, and there's never been any smoke etc. I more concerned that the variable vanes are sticking due to carbon build up, which I'm guessing would explain why it's still sluggish, and why the max boost screw had to be all the way in to get it to boost properly?

disconector the vac pipe from actuator and try moving the rod by hand
