power steering . intermediate shaft or rack ?

#1 by jasoncambs , Fri Dec 14, 2018 12:06 pm

My l200 has developed a steering stiffnes . Just enough to notice . Its like there are some tight areas through the steering range and the wheel dont really want to self centre after a corner . The fluid was just below minimum and i have topped it up . Still seeing the problem but wonder if there is any testing i can do to find out which ecpensive part i need to buy .
If i turn off ignition the steering wheel goes tight as nirmal and goes loose when started so im guessing the pump is acually working . Any help to diagnose appreciated . Thankyou

check your tyre pressures too as this will give similar results as will a slipping power steering belt
worth trying to adjust the steering box if there's play --------> How to :- Adjust Steering Wheel Free Play
you can get seal kits to repair the steering box ----------> https://www.milneroffroad.com/mitsubishi...-kit-main-shaft
but these will not last long if the steering shaft is seriously pitted
quite a few on here have used 'stop leak' kind of stuff for the steering box that have worked quite well

Check your ball joints. Including in the suspension. I had some issues with hard steering and found a badly warn ball join causing the issues as the suspension shifts up and down when the wheel turns.
