Ok you guys bet you know what it is...Im just anewbee to all of this ...Select 4WD and move off= no noise...Then when i turn, either L or R I get this tinging noise from the front end. It stops again when I go in a strait line...Best described as imagine tapping a screwdriver against a scaffolding pole!!!! It only happens in 4WD...Thoughts? K74 Nik

Its a rythmic cling cling noise speed related not engine rev related. As I start turning strait, the noise doesn't stop immediately it just gets less over the next 25yds...very mechanical..very reproducible, def from the front end...

Sounds like it could be a CV joint on the way out

Thanks Heathan, Playing with it a bit more , it does ting ting even in a straight line but is noisier/worse when turning. If it was a cv why would it not ting ting all the time rather than when only in 4 wd...??

It can make a difference if the shaft is being driven or not. Have you had a look at the front diff oil recently?

Only newish to this game...Im due an mot end of sept and from there I'm taking the truck off the road for a load of work. the front discs pads rear drums all need a dose of looking at. The rear diff lock is on the list also. The front diff oil was on the list. Is it worth looking at it sooner?

If there's nothing else obviously making the noise, it's prob worth a look. Had to replace the diff on mine a while back as it got flooded. Was doing something similar thing to yours at first, then degenerated quickly so that it wouldn't move at all in 4WD.

If all the brakes need looking at why wait when they might run the risk of failing the MOT. Surely it would make sense to do them first.

Had a "pre mot" mot done during covit and it failed on lights horn etc but passed everything else so I was "sort of able to use it" until my actual mot is due in Sept. Fixed all the fail things during covet. Doing the brakes ,diffs, will take me months to sort as I take it off the road in the winter and give it a "dose of looking at"..I'm sort of concerned re its emissions and depending on that pass will dictate what the priority over winter is. Chef reckoned on removing the head(new gasket),doing the valve stem seals, cleaning the injectors all in the one project.( I can see wheres he coming from) This would also give me a chance to look at the bore wear.sounds like a busy winter to me !!! If the bore is "gone" then Im not sureI want to pump £ into diffs, brakes etc....thoughts Nik

sounds to me like it could be the front diff actuator not engaging or disengaging properly
heard it before on a classic but it was more of a click/clunk type of noise rather than a tinging
little rubber bellows on the front diff, pull the rubber back , squirt with lube of some sort and see if that helps
usually happened when going into 4WD or coming out of 4WD for 30 seconds or so as the plunger tried to get into the right position

As @krutly has said a ting noise suggests the 4x4 has not engaged properly so could be actuator problem, cv joints have a distinct click to them when they are worn out , your ting sounds reminds me of my broken diff lock in my k74 , it won’t engage properly so makes a metallic ting when you try, not saying your is broken just not engaging properly

Ok so the I think the answer was a knackered UJ on the shaft coming from the transfare box going forward..Its pretty rattly...I can see a front flange with four bolts that look easy to remove, The other end next to the transfer box has a large rubber slieve over it...is it hard to remove this shaft to replace the Uj's?...does it have to be marked up to keep it balanced? As matter of interest does this shaft spin when in 2wd or only in 4 ..Ta as usual...Nik

It should only spin in 4wd. If the light is flashing in 2wd it will probably be spinning then too. You should mark it up so the parts go back relative to each other.
