Am doing the head gasket on my truck.
Bought it relatively cheap as it needed work including the gasket. It has 145k miles and has been steadily leaking oil for a long time. While I have the head off just wondering what other maintenance I can do, especially to sort out the oil leak. a mechanic friend looked at it and advised the oil leak maybe coming from the head gasket but wondering if any of you knowledgeable peeps know of any other seals or such that maybe causing it.
Also am wondering what else I should do while I have the chance. Been reading through the forums and already have a hit list as follows:
Water pump
Timing belts and tensioners
Replacing the main head bolts for new ones
Thermostat
Was wondering about checking the turbo and what I should look for (although it was working fine before)
Maybe the crank shaft oil seal (although imagine that could be tricky so hoping to avoid if possible)
Thanks in advance

get a alloy half moon, change all the coolant pipes easy with the head off from turbo round back off block from stat housing / water pump to turbo to top entry on head.

Thanks hot chef.. Sounds like a plan.. Guessing the half moon is at the back of rocker cover gasket?
Things are going OK, cold weather and rain considered.. Nearly got head off and broken off waiting for rain to pass. Also considering whether I need to pull off the bottom pulleys before removing the timing belt so I have option to replace the belts
Cheers

if the belts are old yeh do it if not no need I have done it all ways mate, yeh back of head is the half moon i stick them in real good with dirko if the head is off easier to stick it in and let the dirko go off 24 hours for best results before it gets hot oil splashing on it
id also replace bottom pulley if it is old and the bolt washer and woodfruf key, run huh, get a coat on mate!
I been waiting on milners all fooking week tell ya what they are getting worse and worse!

Got it from miners...put about 30k on it since...never had any snags...saw some pictures of a delaminated original and the damage it could do ...but then again I don't thrash it..would you tac weld it to take the load off the woodruff....Nik

I've only ever seen the solid ones on Ebay , many years ago( at least 7 or 8 years ) . They were sold by a company called AZ or A-z can't remember the name properly

Ok just got the results back from the crack test and.. the head is cracked around the first cylinder by the injector entry point! Not over the moon but at least I tested! So ordered new head from Milner’s and pressing on once get delivered.
Ordered a bunch of other maintenance parts too so the list is building up:
New Head and gasket kit including head bolts
New water pump
New timing belt kit and tensioners
Crankshaft oil seal (bad oil leaks with loads of buildup around this area so hoping this fixes)
That’ll probably keep me busy till end of week.. good thing I’ve been re furloughed!
Only thing now is to work out how to remove the crank shaft oil seal

There's plenty of room to get a screwdriver into the old seal and carefully lever it out.

Ok to update on this.. been a mission which has been a juggle with rain and work commitments!
So have put on new parts from Milner’s (good delivery time but still waiting on a refund for cancelled items):
New Cylinder head with 5 notch gasket kit
New water pump
New crank oil seals
New coolant hoses all around head and EGR
New balance belt and timing belts and tensioner
Didn’t replace the crankshaft pulley or woodruff key as it seemed very solid and new looking, but did replace the bottom timing cover as it was cracked
Put carefully back together with torque settings and incredibly it fired up as soon as the fuel got back to the injectors. Ran up for a while and smoked a bit initially but then cleared and looks good except the EML is on.. took for a test ride and noticed the Rev counter wasn’t working and it seemed to go into limp mode! However it got up to temperature very well, stat all good and mechanically seems sound with none of the previous oil leaks from what I can see.
After a break from it at work came back to investigate
Got back and now fires on ignition but dies as soon as releasing the key. So good news and bad news as it appears I’ve tripped the crank sensor somehow.
Need to focus more on my work so now thinking the best plan is to nail the sensor issue get the truck running reliably and cut my losses and get a cheap runabout ! Shame as much as I enjoy tinkering and it’s a great little truck when it’s running, just didn’t quite anticipate how much time energy and money it would take to get nailed!
So next I will be removing the timing covers and trying to realign the sensor and or order a new one and press on.
Cheers

Ok just got a break in the weather today and have had the chance to have a look.. the sensor bit looks ok although noticed it didn’t seem aligned with anything particular and there is a small crack where the bolt hole is.. also noticed that I can fit it with the sensor part out toward the radiator or it will fit backwards with the sensor over the cam belt.. can’t find any diagrams or pictures of how it’s meant to be and when I removed it was so caked in oil couldn’t see 😂
So am thinking probably best to get a new sensor and hope for the best.. also see if I can work out properly how it works as isn’t clear to me what it is sensing as such

Oh.. to be clear l am pretty sure it is sending the rotation of the crank and guessing that is from the crank pulley and the timing mark.. However I can’t seem to align it with that

The crank sensor picks up from the metal disc that fits between the cam belt pulley and bottom pulley, if it got bent in any way while reassembled it could be missing signals to the ecu
