Hi,
I really ought to sort this!! Speedo and odometer stopped working, I've changed the sensor on the gearbox but no joy so I'm going to get a 2nd hand set of clocks and swap them over? Any guides or pointers on how to remove the clock binnacle? Assuming the clocks are good but they dont solve my problem, where else do I look ie loom split etc?
Thanks

Have you checked the wiring coming from the sensor for splits ect or excessive strain on them? Im sure Ive heard somewhere if there's too much of an arch/bend/strain on them this might cause speedo not to work?

Yep, when I swapped the sensor I had a quick look at the wires, they all seemed ok, but that doesn't mean theyre not split? Next thing I'll try (when it stops raining) is to check the continuity of the negative, and check the voltage in the other 2 wires into the sensor. What about the drive that the sensor fits to, (the bit that goes into the gearbox with the nylon drive), whats the chances of this failing, or how do I check it? I have no idea how to get the clocks out so that'll be the last check / swap?

Hi All,
further to my post, I've now checked the wiring, continuity and voltage to the plug socket that attaches to the speed sensor in the gearbox. I have a good earth, and with the ignition on (engine not running), I have approx 12v tothe plug. However, I don't seem to have a signal voltage (should be 4.8v ish?) at the plug socket. Am I correct in expecting a signal voltage or have I got this all wrong?
If I haven't got a signal voltage, and all the wires seem to be intact, where do I look next?

I'm no expert here, but I wouldn't expect a signal voltage if the prop isn't moving.

Hi Heathen,,,,,,
yep,,,,thats what I thought, but then I saw this;

I know its a different vehicle, but the principal should be the same?

Well that's something I've learnt today then If it is the same system then it looks like you're good. There will be a section in the workshop manual detailing the complete test procedure - so long as you can find one! You could try an OBD reader on it, depends if the feed goes to the ECU and then to the clocks, or the other way round.

Hi Heathen,,,,,,, forget what I said,,,,and what the honda video says!!! You were right,,,,and I was wrong!!
There is a -ve and +ve feed into the vss and a "+ve pulse signal" out of it. It took me a while to figure it out, but you were right!!
I am now at the position where I know the gearbox worm drive is ok, the output drive from the gearbox is meshed and thats ok, and I now (because I followed your thoughts!) there is an output pulse when the wheels turn. So now I have 3 options,,,,there is a break in the wiring, the plug connector has come out of the speedo or the speedo is knackered? Any ideas? Any idea where I can find a wiring diagram to see if the wire from the vss goes straight to the speedo?
