how much play?

#1 by birdie , Thu Jun 06, 2013 4:56 pm

Just wondering how much play there should be iny prop centre bearing? Rumbling noise under acceleration is a lot worse today, there is quite a bit of play, but not sure if it is too much

Is the rubber round the bearing badly perished?? If u can't touch the outer casing shell with the rubber then it should be ok. They usually vibrate when setting off if there buggered.

Noise is there setting off, but worse accelerating under load, especially when towing

Just make sure u mark the prop so that when u split it it will go back together the way it came off. I can unbalance the prop sometimes if its not realigned right.

4 bolts to take the rear end of the prop off the diff. And 2 bolts holding the bearing onto the chassis. The front of the prop should then slide out of the gearbox. I put a rag in the end of the box to stop it loosing any oil. Then u need to centre punch or mark the prop on the big side and the small side opposite each other to make sure u put it back together right. Then split and remove the centre u.j. This is preference but I then cut the rubber to take the outer bearing casing off so that I could get a better grip with the bearing puller on the bearing. U can clamp it in a vice and bash it off If u don't have a puller. U can borrow mine if u need it. Fitting is just the opposite of this. I would also measure your u.j width before ordering as there are 3 different sizes. I only know this cos I ordered the wrong ones last time. I did all 3 u.j's while the prop was off. Mite be worth doin

I did my first one without a puller. I just put the prop in the vice and kept tapping the bearing all the way round with the hammer till it came off.
