help needed if possible please, i know it's hard to diagnose any engine noise without hearing it but my 05 animal developed a slight engine thump last week so pulled over and got it recovered to a friends garage incase i caused more damage, i had this last year but a hell of a lot louder and a lot of vibrating which turned out to be a bottom end rebuild. this time the garage looked and said the timing belt was loose so they've tightened it up but its apparently still making the noise, i've been having some fueling issues recently so my thoughts were an injector but they're saying it wont be that and they think it will be a cracked block..
any thoughts please>?
thanks in advance chris

A block cracking is a pretty rare event. Your compression would be very low and not sure how they could diagnose that.If the belt was loose it may have slipped a tooth on pump timing which would muck up your injector squirt (technical term )

Well you saying that about injector squirt. I've been having fueling problems of late almost like it's running low on fuel so I've asked them to whip out the injectors as have them checked

If the belt has jumped a tooth on the pump cog then your fuel timing will be out and basically the pump will be squirting your injectors just too late/early and make it run crappy, so if they said the belt was slack i would make sure that the timing is correct. Then i would want to know why the belt was slack, has it stretched ? is there a faulty tensioner etc, before you start testing injectors.

ask the garage if they have a stethoscope to listen to different parts of the engine when its running, it should give them an idea where the knocking is coming from, to just start guessing its a dual mass flywheel when these trucks dont have them tells me they are just guessing now. could end up costing you money.
