I have a 2001 Classic 2.5 Td which has developed a rattle under load which sounds like pinking.....I have checked to see if there are any obvious leaks from exhaust manifold or turbo so Was wondering if it could be a seized wastegate or wastegate actuautor valve.
Its definalty worse giving it beans uphill there is no loss of power just this annoying pinking noise. Has anyone ever had this on a classic before
Regards
Rick

What do you mean by pinking?? Can you explain the noise a bit better

initial thought would be to check the injectors however a lot of vehicles i deal with pinking end up being cross detination with the head gasket. as these are common on the 200 id be checking that aswell

Hi Mallinman...pinking is common on petrol engines...its usualy associated with the ignition timing being too far advanced or the mixture too weak and the engine sounds like its rattling....
Hi Marf....if it was cross detination due to faulty head gasket wouldnt' I have a loss of power?....have had this for a year now and it hasn't got any worse....I pull a trailer frequently and it still pulls like a train...had a stethoscope all around the engine and injectors whilst blipping the throttle to get it to rattle and not able to identify where its coming from....have no blow by....temp remains constant and oil and water levels never move.....I have overhauled/repaired hundreds of engines ranging from chainsaws....OBM's..trucks....tracked vehicles...heavy plant and massive gen sets..this has got me stumped..

hmmm so maybe an injector is overfueling and causing the pre det? if its definately pinking then one cylinder must be at a higher temp so maybe try using a laser thermometer on the exhaust manifold after a racy run? could maybe be the tappets need adjusting due to staying closed too long or oposite stroke, open too long?? do you get any smoke?

If it still pulls like a train and has plenty of power and isn't getting worse then don't worry. Just drive it till it breaks. You could spend hours and pounds tinkering to try and fix it and then it break anyhow or stays the same.
If it still works........

Mine did this when injector 1 was overfuelling . It blew my head gasket before I got the chance to investigate it. Literally blew the gasket from the cylinder wall out to the side of the block.
