I'm trying to track down temp sensors on my '93 4D56T engine as it may be responsible for a malfunctioning glow plug circuit, i've ruled out the coolant temp sensor as its functioning fine and i'm wondering if either of these pictured (attached) are alternative temp sensors?
cheers

Can't see a temp sensor in the pic.. I can see:
Fuel pump
Fuel hoses
Injectors
Injector pipes
Fuel spill off rail
Cylinder head
Engine bolts
On a 4d56t the engine cooling temp sensor is mounted on the cylinder head right at the front, closest to the timing belt. ie. where the studs are. This is what decides whether or not to heat the glow plugs - the other engine temp sensor is for the temp gauge on your clocks, these will likely be on the same wiring loom.

Hi there and thanks for this, yeah, i found the coolant temp sensor where you describe and tested by disconnecting to see how it affected the dashboard gauge, which obviously didn't work when it was disconnected, so if this is working then my glow plug circuit problem isn't from this sensor?
what do you mean by 'the other engine temp sensor is for the temp gauge on your clocks' sorry to be thick… where is it located please?

Hi Ronnie, its 1 year out! as they say.. and just different enough to make it a total pain in the arse i'm afraid, i've tried using wiring diagrams from pagers etc that use the same gear but again they are all slightly different

Isn't that an earth strap bolted to the block on your picture?
I have a 4d56t fbw, just realised yours is an older version but on the 96-05s, fbw and non fbw, the engine coolant temp sensor has no impact on the temp needle on the dials - there's a separate wire and temperature sensor for this on these engines I changed my ECTS three months ago as it was faulty; plugs were coming on when warm and idle was too high when warmed up.. Maybe yours is different because it's an earlier model, strange they should change which sensor does what though.. Here's a couple of pics I found online of the two sensor locations

Done some digging, I think this pic is what yours will look like, I'm pretty sure the sensor to the left (A) controls glow plugs, and hose sensor (B) controls temp gauge.. Opposite to what you've found out so far from testing? Could be an electrical gremlin..

Hi Cribbs, yeah I think its the earth strap as you say, one mystery down! I've now compared your photo with my truck and as you can see from my pic there is a plug in the radiator hose where the sensor would be, I think that this really means that I have only one temp sensor on my engine which is working normally and the fault must lie somewhere else in the glow plug circuit
thanks again for your effort on this, one step nearer the fix!

@aegir71 does the glow plug light come on the dash when cold? Also, has that plug in your picture been fitted as standard? I'm just wondering if someone has bodged the one sensor to do both jobs or if it left the factory like that
Not easy finding info online for this engine, I can imagine that's pretty frustrating!

Currently, having replaced the relay switch/solenoid yesterday, the glow plug circuit is working as normal. The problem is that this relay is getting blown (i've replaced it twice in a couple of months) and it was suggested that a faulty temp sensor would be a likely cause. The Mitsu main dealer has come back confirming that there is indeed only one sensor available for this engine which would seem to confirm investigations to date.
I have found a site totally dedicated to my model with a great deal of info, unfortunately its in pakistani….

Umm.. Google translate?
I've just read your other thread. Sounds to me like a bad connection somewhere that's overloading the relay, have you tried removing your glow plug rail and giving it a good clean, that might help, it's just a case of undoing each of the small nuts on the top of glow plugs and the rail will slide out towards the passenger side, if that's not allowing the circuit to complete, that could be the problem?
Failing that, get learning urdu!
