Remaps - lets talk

#1 by Basil , Mon Jun 04, 2012 10:28 pm

ok folks I `m pretty sure we`ve not spoken of the dark art of remapping before - they speak of it a lot for new shapes on the oz forum, but I`d like to spark up a fight er, discussion on what it is , what it does, potential shortcomings of doing it are etc, etc, etc

You know that chip it site you sent me from Oz? If you haven't, read their gumph on how to do it correctly. You have an EGt gauge so the risk factor is low. Get someone who can reverse it should your EGT's rise. Far as I am concerned it is safe if done competently. Try tuning a modern day engine without doing a remap.

Bas I know you've got an Apollo, alisport Ic and EGR blanked. Do you have a stainless exhaust too? With the hydro and a remap you'll be well on your way to my targets

still got the original exhaust - we had a thread on the Old Crap site re original exhuasts, and its seems the original nearly lasts forever, but once you change it , SS is the way to go cos after market ones die very quickly by comparison

Yeah I've read that they last for ages. If you do replace I can't see a point in not putting S/S on anyway. Better in every way. Remap be a lot cheaper than the V6 conversion.

you have to decide the reasons you want a remap, low end grunt, high end power, economy, what fuel you will be using, lots of thought needed to get it right rather than a jack of all master of none, to me i could see a reason to have a switch, diesel and veg, veg having the higher calorific value and my main fuel, but with a fall back to dino if the need arose

I`d love to do the v6 but the logistics are huge - mainly cos the truck is the works vehicle to tow things aboot - can`t do without it for two days let alone two weeks

Very much why I started all this tuning process on the 4D56. If the 3.2 ever does happen I'll have the dog car and trailer to keep operating with.

Mike... I think to be honest with a remap and hydro the truck will be such a vast improvement Basil won't care

I've had a few of my previous cars remapped on a rolling road and I've never had any issues, I do agree with your ethos on a stainless exhaust, no point in changing if yours is okay.
Unless your getting a custom exhaust and manifold it will make no difference, like fitting tits to a fish if your getting an off the shelf stainless, no increase in performance and their not maintainance free.
A nice bit of bling though

I don't want more speed or power, but if there is a remap that will get me 40mpg then sign me up....

They do all claim to give mpg improvement. 40mpg on a classic might be unrealistic though

I put the ralliart box on mine which was supposed to give me a huge boost in power and mpg
I got the power but I lost 2 mph 28.8 with the box on ( new shape )
Don't know whether to keep it on or take it off

They love prawns, rich tea biscuits, brown bread............and sometimes fish food too, managed to get some breeding done last year so got some 4" on the go too.
