Removing FRICKEN' wheel arches from the Triton!!

#1 by Yoda , Mon Jun 04, 2012 6:05 pm

Right, been trying to tooooo long to get these wheel arches off the Triton so Jo can make a mould from them. I tried a screw driver and the screw heads chewed up as they are rusted. Tried drilling them out and it blunted all my drill bits which were new. Ordered screw extractors that cut into the head - arrived -tried - they don't. Also ordered screw extractors with reverse thread that wind into the screw, but you have to drill a pilot hole first. So got some titanium drill bits too. Just tried that and it's blunted the titianium bit.

If no one has any suggestions I'm about to order a new set of arches and send them to Jo.

Go to new shape manual in 'specifications' open it, click top left corner'technical manual' click on it and change to'body manual' scroll downleft index to bottom of page 'reference material' click 'installaion and removal' on click on 'overfender' and it will show you how to remove them

Dare I say it, Skotl managed to pull his off without trying......

We know how to remove them Bootsie Just the truck is worse for wear and everything is rusted. Grinder will ruin the arches and Jo needs them in tact to copy them for a mould.

Luke, can you get a pair of pliers or vice grips onto the back sticking out bit of the screw, to undo it

In tack is always a good plan. Sounds like its giving you a right ball ache mate,,, on the bright side what kind of style are we thinking on them...rounded and smooth or slightly angled like these:

these are slightly angular flat with an edge or youve got this style:

or

which are smooth and round. These are currently in the workshop for extended surf arches, youve got the original on the left and the extended on the right

Luke, would it not be easier to take the wing off and if its a scrapper anyway cut the back quarter panels off a couple of inches above the plastic arch that way you'll be able to work on the flat and get into the screws a lot easier.
If your patient with the grinder and don't put too much heat on it I can't see you doing anymore damage than you would by drilling the heads off the screws

I sure aint buying one!! At that price I'll buy anew set of arches and send them to Jo.

Where are you Kurt? The Triton isn't drivable. It's got to be something that treats hardened steel like butter.

The Hilux above is pretty angular and has lots of sharp feature lines and suits the angular arches, the L200 is far more rounded and IMO would suit the more rounded arches

Yeah I was thinking this. I really like the angular ones but possibly because they suit the hilux so much. As boxy as our trucks are they are still quite rounded off. So probably going with the more rounded larger version of what we have.
