V8 Conversion Hopefully

#1 by GaryF , Fri Jun 08, 2012 10:15 pm

A mate and I got hold of a knackered L200 double cab a couple of months ago. Body and chassis in good condition, we are using this as a rolling jig. The V8 4.4lt is out of his RR, it has been slightly breathed on & is putting out over 600bhp at the crank.

We have the gearbox, transfer box, diffs, prop and shafts from a discovery V8. Fitting the engine wasn’t too bad, a few brackets for the engine mounts and a bit of cutting and welding to the bay. We are hoping to keep the 4x4 but are running into problems with the mounting of the running gear. That’s all I can tell you at the moment, there’s an awful lot to iron out that’s even if it is possible. I’ll keep you posted as we progress or fail dismally.

Just as matter of interest with this engine he was getting 9 mpg taking it easy, that’s why he now has a diesel engine in the RR.

Sounds fun, I love a good V8, my RR sounds amazing with a straight through on it, spits flames and all sorts on the over run !!

My FULL commendations to you both About time someone did something like this to an L200! I say stick with it no matter how long it takes! All we needed was a guinea pig truck to lead the way as a template for others to follow suit. Seems you have found the perfect way to do just that

Keep us updated please

Some questions if you don't mind?

4.4litres? Is that a Rover V8 block?
Custom engine mounts I'm guessing?
How's it looking for the gearbox fitting? Moving the cross member or bigger tunnel?

Surely if your fitting rr or disco box and axels then the 4wd shouldn't be a problem

As long as they can get that gear box in I'm guessing. Anything is doable though

4.4 is the BMW. On manufacturing box mounting/adapter plate. Cut the tunnel out completely, we will manufacture a new one later. Engine mounts completely custom, even rubber mounted.

It all fits with a gas axe, just going to take time. Can't wait to see it done.

This was the next level to take sticks truck to but we just lost interest big style. We got it all measured up to do the same conversion but with a 300tdi as a donor

Sounds great You should manage it then. What's the plan for the truck when it's done?

I want nothing more than a bigger displacement diesel to mine. Got any details on that 300tdi conversion Mick??

Bloody Hell, give me a min. I knew I shouldn't of said anything yet, too late now. I'll get some photos. It's the positioning of everything that is the main headache

Basically got offered a 300tdi for 300 quid. In a auto. Engine will drop straight in. As the truck wasn't on the road just cut tunnel and make box and transfer fit. 4 link on the front and 4link rear. It's was talked about and drew up on a beer mat then we lost interest haha but on a whole very doable just time consuming and costly if you pay some 1

Would be something I'd do myself. I want an engine swap at some point. Options trying to be worked out are a new shape 4D56 bottom end, 2.8 or 3.2 Mitsi lumps. It's just very difficult for me to work these things out as I don't have access to any of these engines. I guess one day I'll just have to pick one and get a donor vehicle. Excpet the new shape 4D56. Should be able to do that with just and engine.

Fan-bloody-tastic. Go for it, Gary

My last car had that very same engine; a 2001 E39 BMW 540i with a 4.4l V8 with 286BHP.
Made an absolutely fantastic noise with a stock exhaust - would sound fantastic with a bit of imagination.

Looking forward to the updates, videos and soundtrack.

Re MPG, I was getting 16MPG in standard tune so 9 to the gallon doesn't sound unrealistic once it's had some work done.

Vroom!
