It's time to mod

#1 by malky , Fri Sep 28, 2012 5:07 pm

Well guys after two years of many different excuses it is now time for the modding to begin.

In order to avoid further procrastination I have purchased one of these:

the missus spoke to the owner John very decent bloke sorted to get it to me by week commencing 15th oct when i'm off for the week to start fitting.

The Bumper is far bigger than I had initially planned on, but given the pick-up is moving from everyday motor to general toy vehicle and as a daily driver will be replaced in early 2013 by a sensible and respectable estate I thought stuff it as I wont be pulling any punches in it I may as well give it a decent gum shield. I went for the "without light bar" version.

and one of these:

- gotta say comms and service thus far from this firm spot on it'll be here next tuesday.

I'm also gonna strip off the tub and do the chassis clean down week commencing 15/10 will post some pics in the gallery before i start some of the truck in bits and when its finished....whatever that'll look like

got some good quotes for tyres on the go too - I think i want muds but i've been offered kl78's (at) for £100 a corner fitted and balanced....decisions eh? Can you beleive it BFG at2 the old style ones £150 fitted and balanced. thats all standard 265/70/16. been told kumho kl71 is an old profile and not being produced could someone confirm thats a pile of poo?

Wish me luck - I'll be on with questions no doubt.

cheers

Malky

Great stuff Malky! Winch bumper and winch is a hell of a starting point for modding! Just a thought, but you sure you want to stick with standard size tyres? Not gonna end up wanting some bigger boots further down the line? The price difference is not that big really for wider and higher profile tyres.

A fair point Yoda, I've not committed to any tyres yet its a possibility that bigger may well be the answer but that will mean i need to body lift the motor (and wheel spacers - or consult with stormy master of the offset for wheels) to get them under it, I'm not yet overly keen on the body lift as I am undecided on how far to go with the lift, if at all, the smaller lifts make the process more straight forward (less extending of pipes / gear sticks etc but if I'm gonna go for it once the motor is redundant as a daily driver I guess I could go mental and go for three inch body lift and look at the suspenison lift....god I don't know I just need to make a start and look at where I want to go from there.

It seems modding your motor is a kinda process you do one thing that leads you to the next - look at basil four years or more two trucks and the plaethora of diferent configurations he's worked his way through - i'm hoping to learn some from the work he has already put in, for example I am totally getting a laser at somepoint as its uber cool!!

The current issue I have on tyres is I need a good set for the winter - if it snows here it gets serious so i need to do something about that question fairly quickly ( three months maybe if we are lucky).

Aye bring it on Fatboy - I was thinking snorkel but I need to get some stuff done and spread some of the spending a wee bit.

Danne,

duno if you can remove the lightbar I just ordered it without. we need pictures pictures pictures - as soon as it arrives and the process of fitting man - you gotta share with the group

cheers

Malky - decisive as always.....

Malky, I didn't want to do a body lift either. Whole heap of hasle and doesn't get the chassis off the ground. Granted it's the way to go if you want a big lift, but not for me. Hence why I have been waiting for the bj spacers to do the second stage of my lift. For you , maybe consider a set of Lez's shackles, bj spacers and torsion bar adjustment. This will give 3.5 inches of lift. And only cost around 100 of your hard earned pounds.

To adjust the bars wont take more then a half hour, maybe one if never held a wrench before.

Get yourself a set of bj spacers too while they're up for grabs Malky. As you say it's a learning curve and I can say from my experience that torsion bars to maximum will only allow 32 inch boots on. And they will still rub on compression an turning now and again. I won't suggest any other mods for now That's a pretty damn good start you've got

so list so far is
strip canopy and tub off rub down chassis prime paint and bitumen coat as necessary -(replace every bolt removed or snapped during removal process.)
remove bumper - replace bolts
wire in control unit for winch
fit winch and winch bumoper
fit shacklez and adjust torison bars
Decide what tyres to buy..... easy ...afternoons work that

I fitted 32" before I adjusted the bars so that should not be a problem.

Maybe the difference is that mine are 292mm wide? They do rub...

I went for 265/75/16 Cooper stt muds and they caught ever so slightly at the bottom edge of the bumper but if your getting a winch bumper then that won't be an issue, there is a bit of a price difference in some tyres between the 265 and 285, I don't think the slightly wider tyre will make much if any difference off road

I was thinking more higher profile for ground clearance.

Doing torsion bars is easy malky. I'm useless with spanners and it took me about 20 mins, if that
