Smokkey exhaust....? MOT failure

#1 by Nik Rite , Sun Apr 12, 2020 10:50 am

Morning...The MOT tester grumbled/commented on my smokey exhaust....The truck runs great, I've blanked the egr, and no cat, just a thro pipe. It def runs better with it been blanked. Its 155k miles on it K74...ive had it the last 15k miles. regular oil changes and all the filters are new. The turbo has no axial or lateral play. The exhaust is a grey smoke , particularly at first start and when you blast/blip the throttle at idle. Theres no soot on the rear boot flap...its not that bad. Its an 07 reg import so apparently the"old" mot rules apply, the emissions are not measured....any thoughts where to start looking or what to do?..thanks guys and a happy Easter...Nik

Start with an injector cleaner and new fuel filter

once a year I used forte injector cleaner in my classic
when changing the fuel filter I'd half fill it with diesel treatment (the one with the yellow label and cap) then top it up with fresh fuel
then when I started it up I'd give it a good Italian tune up ...... a goodly amount of revs to see how much black shite would come out the exhaust
never tried any other type of stuff other than forte so dont know if any other brand is better or worse
forte worked so I stuck with it for best part of 10 years, went through half a dozen bottles over the years
mine used to give a quick puff of grey smoke on start up but nothing after that
mine had the EGR removed, a snorkel fitted, a K&N fitted, Cat removed and a side exit so no back box ........ or any box for that matter
clip of mine on startup is here ------------> Krutly's side exit exhaust video clip

Forte Advanced Diesel Treatment off ebay around £13 a bottle, use one every 6 months.
First thing i did when i got my new car a few weeks ago.
Used it in all my L200s and diesel vehicles.

Mine does the same - it's a bit embarrassing to be honest, but goes clean after a minut or so - mine is white(ish) smoke which I think is from unburnt diesel, due to low compression on one cylinder, but it's not bad enough to be worth stripping down yet. I got an advisory about it last MOT, but they only noticed it because I'd dropped the truck off so they had it from cold. Not sure if yours will be the same - would be good to see a photo of the smoke. It might be oil burning off rather than diesel - especially if it still does it after it's warmed up.
