Hi guys hope your all well...Mmmm noticed the truck was becoming progressively hard to start when cold....150k miles...runs fine when warm... God knows what service history it has but slowly working my way through things..Decided to look at the heater plugs. Three were different to the last one...removed them and all the elements were gone!!! Nothing....FA.....Four new ngk's and bingo..back in biz...so then I was wondering where did the elements go?...moving on 1000 miles looking at the lever assembly on the turbo that moves max/min I noticed the lever moves all the way up but doesn't return to the rest setting.... do you think the element bits have damaged the vanes..probably yes??
On a good note the turbo is nearly out 4 hr job...last time it took me a week!! To try an understand how aVGT turbo works I bought a bulk of broken ebay Mtzy turbos and took them apart. I have a few "nozzles" that move freely so i'm hoping I can use some bits...the turbine assembly feel ok.
Knowing what I know now I think glow plugs should be a service item at say !00K miles
Im hoping the bits haven't damaged the bores /valves..
Thoughts? as ever your input is appreciated...Nik

Ok,turbo out and apart...The variable vanes are bent....prob from the glow plugs leaving? The ring is completely seized.....
Luckily i have a spare...Ill keep you posted
Ive included a f0to of the two sets side by side....the one on the left is the "good" one...the one on the right is the one I've just pulled out....if you look carefully especially on the bottom vanes on the right you can see they are not sitting square in its housing....they are all like that...distorted and seized
Thoughts? Regards NikBild entfernt (keine Rechte)

I can't see that being the result of the tips - It's more likely that the bottom screw has been wound out too much and the turbo vanes have smacked into the VGT vanes.

Depends which type of stopper bolt you have - one type has thread right to the end of the bolts. It should be around 3(threads) on lower 11 on upper for these.
The other type has an unthreaded bit at the end. It should be around 1 on lower 9 on upper for these.
There's a table here with more info from the VGT setup document (C is the lower bolt, D is the upper bolt):

Mmmm.Heathen I think your right...all the vanes are slightly bent and I probably did unscrew the lower screw too far out....a lesson to us all!!
AD.... the correct specs for the screw rhreads are in the mitzy technical notice...have you a link for this??
Im putting it together this weekend...ill keep you posted

Ok lots of blood spilt but job finished and she runs first turn! Started putting it back 10.30 this morning ,didn't stop till 6 this evening. Im getting faster each time . It drives/pulls a lot better now the vanes aren't seized. The lever arm and the vanes move very smoothly now. I can't see any other way of cleaning the vanes than taking the turbo out and giving it a good looking at. I set the screws up 3 and 11 as per the Mitzy article.Anything less that 2 turns of the lower screw and your pushing your luck as Heathen suggests. For anyone removing the turbo I found it made life easier by removing the oil filter, the air filter assembly and the hydraulic resivor for power steering. Nearly everything is either 10 or 12mm. Thanks guys for the help and that wee phone call chat..much appreciated.. Nik....stay safe
