WITS.........................END

#1 by bart , Tue Feb 25, 2014 6:09 pm

I have got it all back together new cylinder head , timing/balance belts , replaced a few vacuum hoses that looked iffy , oil ,filters air filter , fuel filter The whole shebang AND.........it is exactly the same as when i started

The only difference is i have better compression ! I have tested all the glow plugs and they are glowing like a glowey thing. So good compression and heat which only really leaves fuel. Bled the injectors and all seemed fine it just would not fire. So as a last resort i gave it a tiny sniff of easy start and BANG fired up straight away.

I am now thinking of draining the tank (as it was off a farmer and they aint to fussy what colour diesel they put in ) is there a way i can give it a go from a known good fuel source ( ie a can, under hood ) in other words independant of the fuel tank ?

Any help will be more than appreciated...

Get a can of fresh derv and pull the fuel pipe off the filter housing and run it off a can.

Yes mate but it'll eat it in no time.... have to fit the return line into the can too... this'll prove if the pump and injectors are good..
Tiny sniff to help it clear it's pipes, run for a while and then leave it to rest for 5 mins and then turn the key, should start ok if the front end of the fuel system is OK

So start it up with a sniff let it run for 5 mins.

with a container with clean fuel and the pipe from fuel pump to filter in it and the return. Should i drain the return into a seperate container to avoid putting it back through ?

Nope, shove it in the same container as the fuel is also used for lubrication and cooling of the fuel pump, so it'll take about 3 x what it needs to send to the injectors..

Is you truck a FBW i.e. no throttle cable. If it is have you checked the crank shaft sensor? What you have described in you last post was the same as mine when I fitted a new engine. Everything was spot on but when started it smoked like a 1970's power station and would not throttle. Turned out the crank shaft sensor was damaged. Changed that and it was as good as gold. There is a procedure for testing in the work shop section. I will try to find it for you later.

I haven't actually tested the crank sensor,it was covered in oil when i changed the belts (due to crankshaft oil seal leak, now changed aswell) so i just gave it a clean and replaced it,there was no damage to the blade and it didn't throw the EML on previously which i think the sensor would. When it is started you can throttle it no problem but yes it does resemble a small power station in it's smoke output. I have ploughed a wedge of dosh into it and it is nigh on exactly the same as when i got it so i am not really loving the l200 experience at the moment and i am not sure what to do next as i can not just keep replacing things and hope it works.

Do we not know anyone with a known good crank sensor you could try.if it works, buy it,if not, ship it back.

I can have a word with my son in law if you like..hes always got spares for l200's.

We had a similar sort of problem with my mates td5 defender. Struggled to start, when goin it ran like crap with smoke and then cut out, Kept saying noisy crank signal and just wouldn't run. and after messing with just about everything u should think about we took it to an old boy mechanic. it turned out to be the injector washers. They had been over tightened and ovaled out after previous fixing oil down the ecu wiring( common td5 fault). They didn't let the fuel leak back and we're messing with the injectors. Something along those lines. . Changed the washers and it ran spot on. Might be completely different to your problem but symptoms just sound similar. Washers are cheap enough to check and replace. Hope this might help.

There isnt a td5 on the road that doesn't,or hasn't had the noisy crank sensor fault..as a general rule it is deffinitly crank sensor at fault.the problem with the td5 was.theres gen sensors at about 110 quid and theres aftermarket ones at about 20. Most go for the latter which cures the fault...for a short while. Then its back.fitting a gen sensor would deffinitly cure it but..you may need the packing shim..the distance between flywheel and sensor is critical..some have the shim fitted, some dont.if the mill lamp came on.then its 100 % crank sensor??if not then its more likely injector seals.

But..thats a td5,a whole different ball park..i think here, for the cost of a sensor its worth a shot as a dodgy crank sensor can produce loads of different issues

Thanks for the offer Daz but as i say i think the crank sensor would give a EML light if it was faulty and i replaced the injector washers as it has a brand new head on it with zero miles on it unfortunately. Timing seems spot on, pump at about 9 degrees, new oil,air fuel filters new heater plugs tested and working fine,EGR and cooler removed, inlet manifold degunked and sparkly.

I have probably done a few more things i have forgot apart from the drive shaft boots and anti roll bar bushes and tail light and other stuff for MOT.........pretty pissed off at the minute, i would take it up to the woods and shoot it if i thought it would start and get there..

Well, you have my respect..cos i wouldnt of gone anywhere near that far in the first place..i would have sold it and got another but, thats me

I know you must me mortified by know wondering what on earth the problem could be..but,it sounds to me like your not a quitter..you will find at the end,its probably something very easy thats causing these issues..i have everything crossed for you...dont give up,you've come so far..you will get there

Check the stack pipes from the tank they are prone to corrosion and can draw air in

Got the injectors back and the results of the test... They just said they were producing the incorrect spray pattern ??

They said that the injectors were just squirting straight forward and they should be coming out in a left and right spray !

I am not sure that is right but they are supposed to know their stuff as most of the work they do is from other garages that send them their problem motors. The price they quoted for refurbishing 4 injectors was right up there with mitsy supplying new ones i think so that is a no go. Anyone know a sensible place to get them done or even have a good set sitting round doing nowt..

Ive seen used sets of injectors on ebay recently going for next to nowt..you always suspected a fueling issue so looks like they could be right
