Treeboa mentioned to me on another thread to look into water injection for cooling purposes, knowing that I am planning some performance mods. After a read through of what the concept is on wikipedia, and then some googling, I gotta say Mike I think you really have a point! There is needless to say lots to learn and so far I haven't found a UK company to enquire with. Seems they can give economy improvements dependant on set up without any other mods. The water is normally mixed with methanol. Water cools and absorbs heat but methanol burns and uses up excess fuel. So you guessed it also gives a performance increase if you have excess fuel, which we all do. It has been proven to lower intake and exhaust temps while still allowing you to up boost pressure and inject more fuel. With this defining logic it seems that people are fitting these and then going for an aggressive remap on the ECU. Far more power and safely as temps are down. Then you have a fail safe so if boost pressure drops the water stops. It's only needed under boost conditions. Sounds simple but no doubt still lots to learn. Diesel Bob and cetlic tuning already told me that they can extract far more than 145Bhp from our engines but at the expense of the engines life. Water methanol injection is developed to allow you to do just that.
If the concept works in an L200, no reason why it wouldn't that I can think of, it would solve all the issues of wanting more power. And the cost is far cheaper than stage 2 and 3 tuning.

Well what d'ya know! Was just browsing that site above when I saw THIS.
If I'm not mistaken that is a 4D56 already with a water injection system installed. I have emailed him to ask details of what we can expect.

There was mention of this sort of thing on the oz forum, il have a look and see if i can find the info
HOLY MOLY! He replied THAT quick..SERIOUSLY read this:
Hi Luke our kits are very popular with diesel owners for various reasons, either for just simple tuning/power gains (handy when towing) or for a cooling gain, again very handy when being tuned and pushed hard or used for towing heavy trailers.
Most go for the simple 6-30psi Base kit, as it's simple and does the job and you can add in a interior on/off switch for when the kit isn't needed, We have a customer running one like this on his 36psi boost'd Nissan Navara @300hp
Running on Veg really isn't a problem.
Kind regards Bruce

BREIF UPDATE
As we all know EGT (exhaust gas temp) is the enemy of ultimate power with any Diesel and an engine that can take more if its kept cool.
MRT are the Australian agents for the worlds BEST water injection system, made by Aquamist.
more info http://mrtperformance.com.au/performanc ... l-aquamist
FINE WATER PARTICLES
Now its important to understand that with this we are talking HUGE pressures and water particles finer than what comes out of a can of fly spray!
BENEFITS
The angle is to run injection to cool the engine, inlet charge, exhaust, etc etc. With Diesel engines high water mixtures can be used, in some cases up to 50%!
HARD TO BELIEVE
Yes putting water INTO your engine first sounds ludicrous, but in a controlled way it can be beneficial. But in a proper managed way results are to be achieved.
TUNING
Its important to note that with any mod like this its not just bolt on and hope!
The car has to be tuned to take advantage of the kit.
OR you can just use it to keep your engine cooler!
OPPORTUNITY
A result of a long chat last week, we are looking for some people who want a limited number of these fantastic kits at a hugely reduced price...
The catch:
+ In return we want the testing and feedback!
+ where possible dyno data
+ fuel economy results
+ and what ever else we can !
MRT TESTING
We will obviously be continuing our testing, but we accept we simply cant tune and test every car that we want to and hence we need YOUR HELP!
Please contact me personally
via this link http://mrtperformance.com.au/contact-us
and mention this.

The base kit by itself is £219.99, then there is the choice of things like a tank(4 quarts £36) and float switch (£25) and the toggle on/off switch (£6)
Kind regards Bruce"
That's not bad at all! Wacka remap on it for £320 and two small turbo's to prevent lag. And boooom....one powerful truck! Oh happy days!!!
Thank you Mike!!

I know what i said yday about putting water into the engine, but the more i read on this stuff the better it gets
I second that! I've been reading up on this for a good few hours now. It just gets better and better. My tuning friend who has taught me a lot mentioned it ages ago. Saying there was likely no need to worry about extra heat or strengthening the engine if I went down the water/meth route, and that I should look into it for my truck. It wasn't until Mike said it yesterday that I thought "why haven't I looked at that" Crazy.........

old technology thats been updated to suit todays motors, i got sick of mentioning this on the oc only to be told i was talking out my arse basically, unfortunatly they seem to be very blinkered over there, allthough i agree with the sentiment of its a bloody tractor not a sports car the fact is all the classics need a wee bit of help, and not just via the plug in box thats been near proven to cause or help cause the overheating issues, it does beg the question if you had an 03 in standard trim, if you added water injection to it would you then have suffered the egr cooler failure and from that the head failures

No you wouldn't. Not if it's installed and set up correctly. Honestly even if you don't care for more power the 4D56 should have one of these on to just keep it cool. You need not increase boost and fuel. Just drive around happy that it's keeping everything sweet.
But otherwise as you say the engines need a bit of help in classics. Nothing wrong with that. After all common railed and twin cam'd it for the new shape. We aren't doing anything more drastic. It's a no brainier if you ask me.

Being told that Meth, like NOS, is illegal to use on the road over here. Ie you can have Nitrous installed but the bottle must be off and not be able to be switched on from the cab. Now I know what these things are like, people just trasnfer hearsay so you can't rely on it. I've emailed Bruce at Devils own, and also asked if meth is illegal can you still run water injection without it.

Newer Impreza STI's come standard with water spray kits, theres two types ones that spray ONTO the IC and other that spray INTO the IC. I was thinking of fitting the aquamist one to my T% as its hot all the time only running 280bhp. The lads on the volvo tuning forum ( yes you heard volvo and tuning in the same sentance) use them and have checked the effects with a computer plugged in, seems to massivly reduce EGT and because of this the gain more power or at the very least manage to keep the power there all the time instead of it getting to hot and the managment system raining the timing and over fuelling to cool the EGT's meaning loss of powr.
They run meth/water in theres but i cannot remember the ratio's I could be wrong here but one of them was using 100% in his but then again that car was well into the 500bhp mark !!!!
NASA spent millions developing a pen that works in space, the russians used a pencil !!!!!!!
I do not intend to tip toe through life, but to arrive at deaths doors safely!

Cheers for the info Scooby. From what I'm seeing these kits inject into the intake manifold. So after the intercooler.
Also just heard from Bruce at devils own. He says meth is not illegal to use on the road and most insurers used to dealing with mods don't have much issue as 50% mix is not flammable anyway. However you can if you wish just run water without meth. Meth is for those looking for big power gains.
