Reversing Camera Install

#1 by ricicles , Sat Jun 09, 2012 7:46 pm

Hi All, spent a few hours this afternoon fitting a camera and screen to my dads L200, used a small 3.5inch screen and a camera off eBay, total was around £30.

Screen will sit to the right of the dash, had to remove the pillar trim to get the plugs down.

http://i.imgur.com/DWP6L.jpg (had to use a link here due to the 3 image limit)

Power for the screen was via the cig lighter, the screen loom has it's own in-line fuse so no worries there.

Power for the camera was via one of the reversing lights, this way when you shift into Reverse the screen wakes up automatically displaying the picture:

http://i.imgur.com/ZpTC3.jpg (and this image is too tall)

Camera mounted above the numberplate, slightly to the right out of the way if we need to drop the spare:

The result:

Tow ball is in view which is a plus for seeing how far away you are from something, quite a wide angle lense.

Used some 2 core cable and plugs from Maplin for the signal wire, enters the cabin from a gromit near the bottle jack and then follows some existing wiring to behind the speaker where the connections are made.

Ben

Excellent job mate well done, fancy doing us a write up on what and how, then we can stick it in the How To :- section, if you would do this , then send me the pics to lezt@l200forum.com and we can put them in.
Great job and excellent that you can see the towball for hitching up.

It'll have the reversing lights to do some of the work of lighting up the area.

Great job. Love the convenience of hitching a trailer with that. Can you post the link from ebay please? Second time I've seen one and I really want one

The camera does see infra-red though, would be simple to add a strip of LED's somewhere, a project for another day!

I'm afraid I didn't take any more pictures, I'll try to add a "how to" post later.

Here you are:

Werbung: Screen

Werbung: Camera

As said above though might be worth looking for one with infra red lights, the theory is the same.

Ben, those ones will be fine mate, if you could do a how to it would be fantastic, everyone will have a slightly different 'take' on how to do a job, the more we have the better for us all.
Thanks.

Have a quick look at this then, Werbung: 7" Screen with wireless rev camera, bluetooth, fm tx to stereo for MP3's and auto switching, free lifetime updates on the mapping, playing with one at the moment and they are great. £75

Guys if you are going to spend £££s i would suggest you get one with LED night vision.
I have supplied kits on here and the OC, they are far better with night vision.

OK Lez, time for some dumb @rse questions if you don't mind humouring me
does it work as a standard satnav will? (as I really need to get one rather than borrow other peoples)
does it come with the maps already on it?
Is it any good as a satnav or would I be better off getting a dedicated one?
is the touch screen just a gimick or is it good to use?
how does the camera and its transmitter get its power?
does it take its power from the reversing lights as above?
how "plug 'n' play is it ?
as I am not comfortable with the witchcraft that is electricity how hard is it to fit?
to use it, would the cigarette lighter plug lead have to stay in all the time?
does it have a built in battery thingy(I noticed the 3 pin plug thing)?
If I put mp3 songs on a memory card of some sort will it play them ?
does it have its own built in speakers or is it rigged through the stereo?
with the right power connector could it run off my 12volt motorbike electrics?
and finally ............ would you reccomend it ............ should I get one?

cheers mate
and sorry if I've hijacked the thread

OK Lez, time for some dumb @rse questions if you don't mind humouring me If I must
does it work as a standard satnav will? (as I really need to get one rather than borrow other peoples) yes and better
does it come with the maps already on it? yes and free update for life
Is it any good as a satnav or would I be better off getting a dedicated one? I am running a slightly different versionand it's better than my Alpine dedicated.
is the touch screen just a gimick or is it good to use? I can let you know in around a week when my one of these arrives.
how does the camera and its transmitter get its power? From the reverse lights
does it take its power from the reversing lights as above? Yes
how "plug 'n' play is it ? extremely, it'll activate the rev cam as soon as you put it into gear
as I am not comfortable with the witchcraft that is electricity how hard is it to fit? even you can manage two wires at the front and two at the back
to use it, would the cigarette lighter plug lead have to stay in all the time? No, cut the plug off and hard wire it in, two of the four wires.
does it have a built in battery thingy(I noticed the 3 pin plug thing)? Yes battery built in so you can take it mobile on foot
If I put mp3 songs on a memory card of some sort will it play them ? Just like an I-Pod with the info etc up on screen
does it have its own built in speakers or is it rigged through the stereo? it has an FM transmitter, select frequency and tune in the radio, save as a radio station, select station when playing MP3's
with the right power connector could it run off my 12volt motorbike electrics? No probs, same deal just sort an extra power cable then use in both
and finally ............ would you recommend it ............ should I get one? Tell you in a couple of days when mine arrives, I am ditching my Alpine say nav and rev camera for one of these.

Does it have bluetooth for the phone................ oh yessir and I believe you can dial from the screen, and see who is calling, will verify this in a little while when it arrives.

So in a nutshell.
Satnav with lifetime updates, should also have the 3D buildings if it's the same as the one I have at the moment.
Bluetooth connectivity with on screen dialling and info.
MP3 Player with an FM transmitter for using the stereo speakers.
MP4 player using stereo for sound.

cheers mate
and sorry if I've hijacked the thread

Cheers for that Lez, when you get yours I'll be very interested if its as good as you hope it is. If the verdict is a thumbs up then I'll get one too as a reversing camera and screen is on my wish list along with a sat nav so 2 birds with one stone spring to mind here.

oh and fitting the camera means drilling more holes in the bodywork , yes ?

Unfortunately your lead role in driller killer is a long way off yet, no holes to drill, just a rubber grommet to pierce, camera bracket is made to fit under the numberplate fixings...
