Spot on that. You want a custom bumper to be exactly what you had in mind. As an off the shelf bumper, it ain't bad. But not as a custom made to order bumper.

In preparation for the PlastDip I took a walk around the truck and closely inspected the paint work for anything that could do with attention first. Minor scratches and blemishes that a T-cut would sort were not really on my list. I'm more concerned with stone chips. About a year ago when I last inspected it this closely there were none. This time round I was not impressed. I had maybe 20 plus across the whole vehicle that had exposed metal and in some cases started to rust. The majority of them on the bonnet as you would expect. We're talking very small nail head or smaller size stone chips. Not visible without very close inspection, but of course they would get worse without attention.

So out came the Kurust and stone chip kit. All cured and covered up now. This weekend I'll wet sand them back to a flush surface and then T-cut the whole truck to remove the blemish left behind.

All I can say is I'm damn glad I found this PlastiDip option when I did. The high mileage I do is a killer on paint work. And I don't neglect it either. I wash and wax it every two weeks minimum. And in dirty wet winter months it's every week!

PlastDip will be done in June.

Ordered PlastiDip yesterday. She's going matt black. Had a hard time deciding between that and gun metal grey. Flipped a coin in the end....

The date for spraying is 7th-9th June.

Luke what kit did you go for? Also did u just order it directly?

RE: Yoda's build project.

#108 by Yoda , Fri Apr 19, 2013 1:38 pm

Yes Raj I ordered direct from PlastiDip. Just called then first to make sure they had stock.

I didn't get a kit, just paint and thinners. My painter friend has everything else to hand already.

So how many litres of each do I need

RE: Yoda's build project.

#110 by Yoda , Fri Apr 19, 2013 7:48 pm

I am reliably informed you need 10 litres of paint and 10 litres of thinners. Which when mixed 1:1 makes the 20 litres previously quoted on the other thread. £336 from PlastDip. The other place, Cardip.co.uk look cheaper but aren't when you get through check out. They just wack it on the delivery instead where as PlastDip is 'free' delivery.

Don't get any old thinners though, you need PlastiDip's own stuff. Also you need a good degreaser for the truck before hand. Must remove ALL polish and wax etc from everywhere. Again I haven't needed to buy this as he gets it bulk and trade. Not sure if PlastiDip sell it, didn't look.

Hey Luke, have you seen the forums about $50 paint jobs?
Have a look what the bloke with the orange Dodge Charger achieved using a foam roller here....

Wow that's a long thread Vince! I'll see if I have the time to view it properly later.

I have come across a few matt paint jobs done with rollers. From the relevant threads and pictures it did appear to be done very well. I did consider it. It certainly would be cheap as you say. And an easy touch up for offroading. The reason I went with PlastiDip was it's water repellant proprieties and it's reasonable protection for casual offroading and stone chips etc. also unlike a true paint job it can always be removed, having preserved the paint underneath, should I ever want to. I don't know where I will go in the future. I don't plan on selling the truck, but it's nice to have the option of removing it if I did. I might eventually want a permanent matt paint job, and to that extent I might one day even splash out on a impenetrable Line X paint job. We'll see where the wind takes me.

There are some truly great home paint jobs out there, done for next to nothing. At the other end of the spectrum Line X coating would coast in the region of 2k. For now the PlastiDip seemed like a reasonable non-permanent compromise between the two at a price I'm happy with for now. In two years, who knows....

.....if I hadn't encountered PlastiDip right now I wouldn't be doing anything just yet I don't think. I even see it as a stop gap to make up my mind over the next couple years whilst preserving my paint work. If it does that well it might not ever come off.....

As Plasti-dip and other similar coatings aren't permanent, and you change the vehicle colour, does the DVLA need to be informed?

Its permanent in the fact that its not a sticker but a spray on coating which will last as long as any paint finish, whether its technically defined as permanent is probably irrelevant, if your completely changing the vehicle colour you Should notify the DVLA.

Notice how I said "should" as opposed to "must"

If the cops had cause to stop it they would likely put a form in to notify the DVLA of a change of colour as I don't think they would be interested in hearing how it technically differs from paint, in their mind, and possibly the DVLA, its not a sticker, its sprayed and changes the colour of the vehicle, so its essentialy a paint that can be removed.

Haven't seen the lanes this dry for ages. Had to have a play. Probably the last photos before the PlastiDipping too.

Nice. Got to ask... how are you going to paint it wrt the snorkel. do you have to take that off first?

We'll see. Side steps, rear nudge bar, bull bar and roof rack are coming off. Fella doing it reckons we can mask the snorkel easily enough. If it has to come off then so be it. Easier than installation. Gotta say though. I quite like the idea of a matt black snorkel to match.
