driveway battlers monster build resto

#1 by Driveway battler , Fri Sep 07, 2012 9:25 pm

Welcome along to my build, first and foremost I'd like to appologise if I'm slow in on updating this, as you will see I've got alot of work to do on my truck and as much as I'd like to sit on the sofa it won't build itself so I'm if there's not an update take it as I'm making progress and am probably rolling around under a k74 with flakes of rust in my eyes.
Anyway, the first picture shows the pickup when I got it, I think its 109k and the belt was 10k overdue (more on that later) it hadnasty tailgate rusty chassis emulsion in the bedliner and the clutch was getting high, but none the less run great 11 months test and got cheap, so I thought.
So I knew the belt needed done and I knew I'd service it, I knew I'd put a tailgate on, and if I had a pickup I had to put a roll bar on it. But both me and my son are grave digger fans and a bodylift was inevitable, then I spotted lift shackles on eBay and thought Itd be rude
At this point I'm committed and decided I'd make it last, so I decided to do a small Resto and replace anything that needed it, in the hope the truck will serve me well for years to come. So along with a full service of fuel filter and system flush, oil filter and system flush, magnatec oil, airfilter, egr blank kit, timing belt kit, crank pulley, woodruff key, bolt, cam seal, cam cover seal, drive belts, cooling system flush, water pump, radiator, thermostat, antifreeze, water wetter, prop centre bearing, fuel lines and fuel tank pickup,red/clear tail lights,3watt led sidelights, mtec 100w headlights.
As far as the chassis goes it was pretty rusty but only 2 patches required really, but I've took it upon myself to get it all down to pretty much bare metal then use the kbs frame coater kit, this is 3 steps number 1 being degreaseing then a rust remover and etchprimer, then the rust seal paint which dries solid. rusty metal can't rust further, as the chemical reaction can't take place without oxygen or moisture. Kbs is basically an advanced version of the hugely acclaimed por15 which classic cars restores and hotrod builders etc the world over have huge success with. Its alot of work to apply but should be worth it.
The front panel has been welded on this before and its a sub par repair but the state of the panel I just decided to renew it, so that was added to the list.
The shocks had seen better days so procomp es9000 all round are ordered +2" at the rear and green boots, justrecieved a set of cooper discoverer Stt 35x12.50x15 tyres on -32 black steel modular rims today.

Good stuff. This KBS frame coater...does it chemically turn the rust back to metal after you've removed the worst of it? Or just coat over and hence prevent getting any worse?

the new boots 35x12.50x15, black steel modulars et-32 offset. they are huge in the flesh guys it doesnt look it in the photo but ill do a comparison shot on monday, these are just below my waist and im 5'6,the truck will have a huge presence with these bad boys installed.

the next time i post ill have shot of the rear underside completed and the start of work on the front.
@yoda the frame coater is a 3 step kit.
step 1 degrease using aquaclean, very strong non petroleum based degreaser, melts, yes melts your skin.
step 2 rust blast, removes rust from metal, etch primes, coats in zinc phospate as corrosion prtection.
step 3 rustseal paint, totaly awesome rock hard resistant to anything except uv rays, its almost structurally strong paint. they pour this on cracks in concrete to stop them spreading, or mix with matting and repair fibre glass hulls on boats.

its pretty cool stuff cant wait to get it all on and finished.

Did you know there was 2 'Highland Patrol' vans heading South on the A9 this afternoon in convoy - and we managed to get them both into the census point.

I was the out guy, I would have stopped you and asked if either of you were you (if that makes sense), but the bald guy in truck 1 was too busy shouting abuse at me.... oops.

Big boots make such a difference to road presence. When I have the 33`s on it works wonders on others folks road manners

looking real good, rear mudguards on normal trucks need to come off - and replacing is always a pain in the backside

@basil. Cheers, with regard to the mudflaps I'm going to trim the lower lip off so it clears the tyre, then run each wheel in turn up a ramp so the maximum point if the tyres radius is in line with the tip of the mudflap and asking as it clear it should be golden.
@colin. Actually I'm loving the White shocks and green boots they will stand out against all the black undertaker and shod be clearly visible which looks awesome if you can see what shocks a trucks running while it drives down the road = lifted.
@twed. Cheers bud can't wait to get it together now before the weather closes In.

Basil that's a hell of a colour combo you've got on them shocks looks familiar lol. Ebony the body is lifted 4" in the pics but it has lift shackles too. I will post comparison pics of my old maxxis tyres shaker these, the oldies are meant to be 31 but they definitely run small as these are at least 5" taller. All in all from what I had I'm guessing +2.5" from the tyres +2/3" from the shackles and torsion bars and +4" from the body lift, so it should measure up at least 8.5"/9.5" taller than it was and still running standard tired leaf springs.

and with helical leaves you could get another 2" from them, like I did on the green and whites in the pic
