My two stroke moto crossers where done nearly every season up to two rebores, once on a 4 stroke, more of a pain on cars etc, but the power improvement is very noticeable. Unlike buying a recon you know the engine, and if you have a garage / space to fully rebuild the engine is a massive achievement and well worth it, the engine is as good or better than new.

Broken ring and in need of a rebore...sounds like my ex bird. I'm not sure how much it would cost but a cylinder leakage test with a compressor should be more accurate. For example if you can feel the compressed air coming out of the exhaust its a sign of a dodgy exhaust valve not seating right, air out the inlet manifold-inlet valve issue, air coming out the engine breather pipe might suggest rings.

it is a bit rattly could be a bit of ring in there somewhere!
could badly adjusted tappets cause the valves not to seat properly
@alex200 is it just a case of take a glow plug out at a time and blow air through the hole?

see a bit of misunderstanding from me there.... I always thought the delamination caused the cam and balance belts to run out of true, which is why it was most urgent to get it dealt with...

So being a bit thick here, take it you still need to take the pulley off to get the plastic cover fully off to change the cambelt?

so why you have that pulley off, would it not make sense to change the cambelt? So you don't have to strip it all down again...piece of mind and all that....

Personally think thats a good idea to do the belts etc ...its 5-6 years ago they were done and only about 10000 miles short of the 54000, you have most of it off anyway so might as well....
