RE: Malky's Mods

#27 by malky , Sat Oct 27, 2012 6:03 pm

I had a spare half hour this evening and got to thinking about what my rear bumper should look like.

I want it to emulate to some degree the exterior qualities of the new front bumper so drew out a few rough ideas and sent them off to a fabricators for a rough pricing.

clicky pics to make larger if required.

Appreciate the sketches are rough as a badgers bum but hopefully they will give enough of an idea for a cost to be provided. I just can't see anything less robust looking right with the massive object thats bolted to the front. besides thats about the smallest i can get it and still fit a winch inside it.

the current idea will have a protrusion of 200 mm out from the truck bed at the rear but the underside will be 70 - 80 mm higher than the tow ball that currently exists. I had thought about putting a tow ball on it as well under the winch fairlead hole (a removable one) but i have no need but there is definately enough space within the plate to do so.

there is room that I could recess the bumper back under the tub by about 150mm , but that would mean dropping the whole bumper to access the winch at any time down the road, would not allow me to chequer plate the top and use it as a step and would preclude the addition of a jerry can holder or the option of putting a swing out spare carrier, the side extrusions on the bumper will go under the rear quarter panels to protect the rear corners (this would justify a tub and cab 1.5 inch lift) and stop just short of the wheel arches.

anyway thats the plan comments and suggestions welcome.

cheers

Malky

hey steve - the tow bar has two plates that hang down from chassis rails and bolt to the tow bar rail - the plates i have drawn in would bolt into those 8mm plates that are already on my chassis - I presume that all l200 classics has the same plates hanging down from the chassis rails to connect whatever type of bumper they have ? no?

cheers

I believe there are a couple of types of bumper Malky that hang from differing droppers

Think the plates may be more part of the tow bar/bumper rather than the chassis.

its dark outside, i'll go look tomorrow - i drew it to fit the plates on mine.... i guess if they are not standard then it may be better to spec it to bolt directly to the chassis rails....

If you plan a winch in it , its gonna have to bud

mine already would mate the drop plates on mine are secured to chasis i just drew out to connect to the two 8mm steel plates taht the tow bar carrier is bolted too

lol - would be a bit embarassing pushing the button on the winch and the whole bumper bounces off across the ground ...

i would say i think it will be ok as that back bumper and towbar is held on by 16 bolts thats what it looks like in the pic of the rear of your truck

i think the 2 bolts on both side will be ok for fixing as winches are for pulling not lifting so all them bolts will be fine 16 in total is well over the top for a towball

You could make it so the winch tray was a separate item

nice lookin job that McK appreciate the offer.

i've seen the second one before. - its a possibility too right enough. But I like the idea of having something close to whats ion the front.

always good to get other peoples thoughts and ideas on these things more than one way to skin a rabbit.

well I have been skulking the internet looking for shackle cleats for my rear bumper and could not beleive the only ones that I can get easily in the uk are these :

so after a bit of further digging about on the internetweb I found some clevis shackle mounts weld on and weld through type cleats made in the good ol u s of a in utah they look like this:

so have ordered up a pair for attaching to the rear bumper, considered the weld-through style as well

decided the weld on type will be sufficient as they are to be welded directly in front of stiffner plates which go through the bumper to be welded roughly in line with mounting brakets.....

Further digging about on the net has uncovered these bracket for a removable tow hitch which could be easily welded onto the bottom of the winch bumoer so as not to lose that trailer pulling capacity:

Just need to decide on what winch now - What is the consensus same one as th efront ? 13000lbs or could i go smaller? bigger is out of the question Basil due to capacity of the bumper....
