RE: WelshMart's Truck

#176 by WelshMart , Tue Jul 12, 2016 2:54 pm

I'll need to post some more pictures as I've got the canopy fitted, a new rear door made and a replacement front window from Acrylic. It works really well for the storage, and is mostly dry. I have one annoying leak on the door near the passenger side hinge. Along the way I have fixed and broken the hinges again a few times so I've got some on order from the States coming through the only Leer dealer in Europe, Germany, got a few months wait on them but they aren't urgent, I think my latest fixes are robust enough to last. I've also managed to source some gas struts from SGS Engineering which are adjustable for pressure which are working well. All in pleased and its cost me less than £100.

I've also got some rear springs from Midland Road Springs sat in the shed to be fitted this weekend as mine are inverted. Which I oddly found out it was cheaper to buy 2 individual springs from them on eBay than a pair, and annoyingly they wont sell them without the shackles which I don't need as I have extended shackles on the truck. I'm interested to see how much they lift the back by as I have a feeling the fronts will have to be done soon to match up...

I got out around Notts laning on Sunday and got a little stuck on one lane, basically I was sat on the diffs, belly plates and wishbones. Which has put the idea of 35's in my head and a 2" body lift... Also after 10hours in the drivers seat my back was in half, the comfort of the seat seems to degrade with every day out laning I do. So I am considering some sort of reclining bucket seat. I guess though I'd have to take out the pressure sensor and plug it in somewhere out of the way so that the seatbelt warning didn't go off constantly, anyone changed seats in a new shape got any advice?

I'll be interested to hear about the leaf springs. I've got milners heavy duty springs on mine and the are just way too hard, even when loaded up in holiday mode with a caravan!

The pressure sensor in the seats can just be left unplugged, with no side effects. I never re attached mine after sound proofing.

After a week of using the truck with the new springs they seem to have made quite a difference. The truck feels much less bouncy, more comfortable, about 3" taller in the rear and feels like it handles better. Although with the added height I'm concerned that the rear shocks are now near their limit, @alex200 do your shock drop brackets fit the new shape?

I'm still constantly fiddling and fettling little bits and this week I have made my canopy central locking work, which is great to know that I know the bits in my canopy can be locked up safely. Fortunately it was very simple with one of my left over central locking actuators.

[[FileSC_0130.JPG|none|auto]]

I've also been researching the winch mount I was given and it appears that this is how it should fit.

Which looks very interesting and almost completely hidden, it will require some sheet metal cutting off but the only reason I can see for it being there is for the bash plate, which can be mounted to the winch plate instead. When I get 5 mins I'm going to chuck it in and see how it looks. I just need to find a winch to fit in there...

So this weekends job arrived today from Milners. I'm hoping these poly boots last longer than the normal rubber ones did.

CV boots done yesterday afternoon but found the top Ball joint had quite a bit of play. Ordered a new one from milners but it means there's no point rebuilding it completely to take it apart again next weekend.

Hi mate
I'm also considering putting some reclining bucket seats in my truck , but I can't find any subframe for sale to fit the newshape , but I don't want to just fit the universal sliders bodged in . How are you planning on fitting them mate .

@animal, I dont have a plan tbh I was going to probably cut the current seats up and with a mix of that, new metal and welds make a subframe to fit.

Got out in the truck this weekend over Yorkshire. Had a day on Saturday over the dales, took in lots of long scenic lanes very little challenge but wonderfull scenery. We did do West Cam Road with the cam steps, git up them with relative ease and a few rough rocky descents.

Sunday we went over the moors but stuck near A19 for ease of getting home. Some nice muddy lanes to start, difficult water crossing with high banks, luckily one truck had a winch. We finished off the day on the famous sheep wash, wow what a lane...

I'm not sure the drive train enjoyed the sheep wash much though as I've got a vibration coming from the centre of the truck between 60-70mph, solution was to drive home at 80mph as it was happy there...

Hmm, still got ideas... Saw a nice RRC bobtail over the weekend. Truck is quickly becoming a toy and would be nice to have something more suited being a toy. We'll see, watch this space...

@AD I was staying with Steve (lead your group in the Peaks), he's moved to Northallerton. He dud all the planning I just turned up and followed him. We mainly did Rutland rig on Sunday with some lanes around Stokesley first.

yeah ive noticed that dude most green lane vids are all outdated which is odd as you got the go pros and dash cams ect, youd think there would be alot of newer ones on there
